The visual profiles of some NFL football helmets may change drastically in 2024. The NFL allows Guardian Caps, which “can reduce the force from head contact” by 20%, in games.
Backlash has begun. Some players say the devices are bulky. Fans and players are appalled by how the blocky accessory makes players’ heads appear disproportionately large.I’m curious because I’m writing a football helmet cultural history.
What happens when player safety conflicts with aesthetics in a multibillion-dollar sport where the helmet is the main branding space and symbol?

Practice field to playing field
Guardian Caps are made of soft, rectilinear pads connected by fabric and attached to players’ helmets by snaps and Velcro.
After the caps were introduced in 2010, some colleges and pros started practicing with them. In 2022, the NFL mandated their use in preseason practices. At first, only linemen and linebackers had to wear them. The league required all players except quarterbacks and kickers to wear them during practice by 2024. In April 2024, the league allowed players to wear them during regular season games.
It seems reasonable to recommend them. The league found in data from all 32 teams that the devices reduce head-on collision impact force by 20% when both players wear them and 10% when one does.
Some scholars doubt the NFL’s confidential research data. Since the devices were mandated, preseason concussion incidence reporting has dropped 52%, according to the league.
Promoting Guardian Caps’ safety is a PR win for the NFL. Research into chronic traumatic encephalopathy, or CTE, and other traumatic brain injuries shows how much repeated head blows can damage the brain, especially football players.
Indianapolis Colts running back Jonathan Taylor, the first high-profile skill-position player to wear a Guardian Cap in a preseason game on Aug. 11, 2024, has supported the league’s safety efforts.
Player objects
So far, Guardian Caps’ introduction hasn’t been a huge success.
The standard Guardian Caps weigh less than 7 ounces (0.2 kilogrammes), but many players find them heavy and hot.
“I hate them,” Seahawks defensive tackle Jarran Reed told The Seattle Times. “I understand their safety, but I’ve played a long time. It looks crazy to me. I dislike them. I’ll remove them.”
“I hate them. Darius Slay, Philadelphia Eagles cornerback, told CBS Sports. Game is part of my swag. If I don’t look the part, I can’t feel it.”
In a fast-paced, violent game, even small physical and psychological margins can affect performance. Reed, Slay, and at least a dozen others don’t seem willing to sacrifice on-field performance for safety.
Even though such players dislike Guardian Caps’ feel and look, it may not be the NFL’s biggest issue with their adoption.arge.
