We know little else about Amazon’s Middle Earth fantasy series. The series has been signed for five seasons, and while details are yet unknown, we have an approximate notion of what to expect.

The Hollywood Reporter reported that Amazon Studios outbid Netflix with $250 million. The rights belong to Tolkien’s heirs, HarperCollins, and New Line Cinema.

The arrangement includes producing up to five seasons based on ‘The Lord of the Rings’, incorporating film and setting material. The rightsholder’s representative, Matt Galsor, told THR, “we are delighted with Amazon and its long-term commitment to literature, home of what will be the first multi-season television series based on The Lord of the Rings.” He called the deal “one of the most difficult, but it was resolved relatively quickly because the different parties have established a close relationship.”

Amazon director of scripted writing Sharon Tal Yguado told THR that the series will be scripted in-house and set in a different time period than the movie. “We have some exceptional ideas to bring to the screen unexplored past stories based on the original writings of J.R.R. Tolkien.” We know the magnitude of “‘The Lord of the Rings’ is a cultural phenomenon that has captured the imagination of generations of fans through books and the big screen.”

Amazon has announced British filmmaker and executive director Wayne Che Yip for the first four episodes alongside Bayona. The director directed ‘Hunters’, ‘Utopia‘, ‘Doctor Who’, and ‘Wheel of Time’ for Amazon Prime Video.
