Michael Bay gave us a dramatic war epic instead of his usual light tone.

As we’ve seen many times, streaming can save box office failures. A second chance for productions that competed with more appealing theater proposals or had unsuccessful advertising campaigns. Streaming is more stable and favors discoveries, making second chances possible. The latest winner is Netflix, SkyShowtime, and Movistar Plus +’s 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi.

Michael Bay’s name seemed to guarantee a box office hit, but it appears that the director’s audience prefers to see him in more urban action films, as the film earned 69.4 million after its 2016 release on a budget of 50, which was insufficient given the marketing costs of films of this size. Even the then-fashionable John Krasinski didn’t promote theatergoing.

The film recalls the September 11, 2012, Islamist militant attack on the US consulate and CIA annex in Benghazi, Libya, the anniversary of the Twin Towers. A military crisis quickly escalated for the six-person Special Operations team rescuing the survivors.

The film, shot between Bay’s last two Transformers films, was quiet at the box office but is one of his highest-rated on Rotten Tomatoes and Filmaffinity. After lighter films like the robot saga or the masterful Pain and Gain, its seriousness and drama may have hurt it. Time to recover.

A movie flop used to be easy to define. A film was a failure in Hollywood’s Golden Age if it didn’t make its budget and then some. The 1980s home video market gave some movies a second life on VHS, but they were still cult favorites. Netflix’s streaming model has changed everything we thought about movie success.

No more DVDs and Blu-rays. Now that streaming is king, a movie that bombs at the box office may find an audience on Netflix for free. Many critically panned plays have done that. Nothing changed about these films when they went from big to small, but they still were huge hits when rereleased.

The 2024 film Madame Web became one of the most infamous and mocked in recent memory. Based on minor Spider-Man comic characters, the film was a Sony cash-in to expand their Spider-Man universe. Dakota Johnson stars as Cassandra Webb, a paramedic who starts having visions of the future and teams up with three teenage girls to fight Ezekiel Sims, the film’s big bad. Unfortunately for Sony, “cash-in” was not possible.

Madame Web was panned by critics and made just over $100 million at the box office on a budget of the same amount and a $60 million marketing cost. Sony was lucky that Madame Web debuted on Netflix a few months after failing in theaters and debuted in second place with 10.8 million views in its first week. It may not save this franchise, but it shows that any movie with enough notoriety can succeed when audiences don’t have to pay for it.

The 2016 film adaptation of Assassin’s Creed by Justin Kurzel and Michael Fassbender followed a string of critical and financial failures. At first, the film seemed fine. After receiving positive production reports, the studio decided to make a sequel while the original was being made. Like many other films on this list, Assassin’s Creed was a box office flop and cost 20th Century Fox $100 million.

Due to its early streaming status, Assassin’s Creed took a few years to arrive on Netflix. Seven, precisely. It immediately entered Netflix’s Top 10 in several international territories when it arrived. Not that this success has revived the film franchise. It remains dormant. Netflix was impressed enough to greenlight a franchise TV series.
