Two lines that are very similar to those used by the Schutzstaffel of Nazi Germany have been selected as the company’s identity symbol.

There is a new debate that is rattling X, and it involves football, coffee, and Nazism. The combination of these three things could not be more improbable. The reason for this is that Irreverentes, a brand that specializes in premium coffee and in which football players Marcos Llorente and Ibai Gómez have been involved, has chosen as its logo a design that is very similar to that of the Schutzstaffel, also known as the “SS,” which was the squadron that served Hitler and the National Socialist German Workers Party. The designs are so similar to one another that the Irreverentes design appears to be an inverted version of the Schutzstaffel emblem.

Irreverentes or the SS monogram? Not only does the question appear to be peculiar, but it is also the fundamental source of the debate that is causing X to shake. Using a design that is evocative of that of the Nazi SS, Irreverentes, a business that is committed to the marketing of premium coffee, equipment for its preparation, and some pieces of clothing, has chosen to use that design as its logo. The design that was selected by the corporation is two parallel and zigzag lines that are almost identical to those of the SS, except they are oriented in the opposite manner. If Hitler’s Schutzstaffel utilized two lightning bolts as an insignia, then the design in question is the same.

And why is there such a fuss? This is a young startup known as Irreverentes. To be more specific, rather youthful in age. At the time of its establishment, which was in October, La Voz de Galicia published an article on its birth. There is no way that the fact that a relatively new company has caused such a stir on social media can be explained solely by the fact that it has a logo that is comparable to that of the SS. The fact that it is connected to two extremely well-known footballers in Spain—Marcos Llorente, who plays for Atlético de Madrid, and Ibai Gómez, who is a former footballer, coach, and is currently in charge of the Dominican Republic’s under-23 team—is the primary factor that has contributed to its visibility.

Bringing attention to the brand. The matter did not actually come to light until Llorente shared a video on his personal Instagram account, where he has 2.3 million followers, in which the logo can be seen clearly. This was despite the fact that the company has been operating for a few months. Furthermore, he is not the only person who has contributed to the brand’s awareness.

Ibai Gómez also shared a number of photographs a few months ago, in which she was seen wearing a sweatshirt bearing the name Irreverentes. However, the discordant logo is only visible in the photographs that are much closer to the subject. It is not just these pieces that both of them use to sell the business; there are others as well. In March, the company made an announcement on Instagram regarding a raffle, and in order to participate, Llorente posed with his 2022 World Cup boots and an Atlético shirt, and Gómez posed with his Athletic Club outfit from the nineteenth and twentieth seasons. Both have been featured on the Instagram page of the brand almost since the time it was first introduced, which was in October of the previous year.

“Real coffee .” Dear friends who are irreverent, here we are. You are already aware that I am a fan of both health and coffee, and at the same time, you are aware that we have recently introduced a genuine coffee. Why do I use the word “real”? “I don’t like to talk about specialty coffee or another type of coffee; rather, I prefer to talk about real coffee and a product that they have called coffee,” Ibai remarked in a video that was uploaded to the Irreverent account.

Coming together as one. Irreverentes presents itself as a brand that was formed by friends in order to “challenge the belief that coffee is bitter and intense in itself” on its website; yet, the website does not indicate who is behind the company. According to elEconomista, the company is a project that is situated in Galicia and is promoted by a group of partners in whom the two footballers participate. These partner groups have previously worked together in other enterprises. In addition, La Voz de Galicia announced at the beginning of 2023 that they had made the decision to collaborate with an Arousa roaster in order to produce their very own brand of specialty coffee.

Despite the fact that the company had already displayed the two strange lightning bolts that resembled the Nazi SS insignia on social media in September, the business daily states that the corporation started working on the final phase of the brand design in February of this year. During that time period, there were already people who called attention to the similarity in a public forum.

Continuing on from one controversy to the next. It is not the first time that Llorente has been found to be involved in a contentious situation. Even if it was for a different reason, he was pointed out in public just a few weeks ago. He boasted about sunbathing in the early afternoon without any protection or sunglasses on. “If you think that skin cancer appears because of the sun, you are the king of the ignorant,” he responded to a user who attacked his attitude and the example he presented on social media. “You are the king of the ignorant.” Not long after that, he was had to make another public statement in order to make it clear that he is not “a melanoma denier.”

However, it is interesting to note that this is not the first issue that has emerged in 2024 regarding the SS logo. After it became widely known on social media that the design of the number 44 on the shirts used by the German national team was strikingly similar to the Nazi insignia, the German Football Association (DFA) made some minor adjustments to the shirts that were manufactured by Adidas in the month of April.
