This wicked Max thriller

Paradoxes in nature drive a Shyamalan film that rivals his best.

Since ‘The Visit’ relaunched him as a suspense master, Shyamalan is a surefire bet for fans of crazy plot twists and oppressive settings. It’s also worth watching not only his directorial efforts, like ‘The trap’ or ‘Knock at the door’, but also his other works, like ‘The vigilantes‘ or ‘Caddo Lake’, which has been surprising Max viewers for months.

It was the most watched movie on Warner’s platform until ‘The Trap‘ dethroned it, proving that viewers want dark and disturbing thrillers. Celine Held and Logan George, who worked with Shyamalan on Apple Plus+’s gorgeous ‘Servant’, directed the film.

We meet Paris (Dylan O’Brien), a young man who feels guilty for surviving a car accident on Caddo Lake that killed his mother, and Ellie (Eliza Scanlen), a teenager who is on a killing spree with her mother but loves her stepsister. Her mysterious disappearance in the swamp uncovers a series of past deaths and disappearances.

‘Caddo Lake’ is like ‘Dark’—half crime thriller, half rural drama. Due to plot twists and a very personal exposition of the facts, this is not a typical ‘who did it?’ but a challenging and surprising production that grows in small details like flashbacks or seemingly inconsequential elements that become important. Remember: less knowledge is better.

Trap, M. Night Shyamalan’s latest thriller, may be his most absurd, which says a lot about the man who never backs down. For those willing to set aside big issues like scrutiny or skepticism before entering the arena, excitement awaits.

Trap opens with dad-of-the-year Cooper (Josh Hartnett) driving his teen daughter Riley (Ariel Donoghue) to see Lady Raven (Saleka Shyamalan), the director’s daughter, perform. Riley sings the latest Lady Raven songs in the car while Dad winces, clearly in love with his off-key angel. They talk about Riley’s ex-friends who are ignoring her as they sit on the floor (“crispy” means cool, but “fried” is cringe) and generation gap issues. Wish all fathers were as understanding as Cooper!

A problem exists, though. In the restroom alone, he pulls out his phone to check a surveillance feed and discovers that he’s “The Butcher,” a deranged serial killer who has chained up his latest kidnap victim in a filthy basement. Unexpected! It improves. After talking to a talkative guy at a merch table (the hilarious Jonathan Langdon), he learns that the FBI knows The Butcher is going to the show. Class, this last-minute matinee is a trap! Police have surrounded the area, and no adult male will leave without being questioned.

I hope no one reading this wants to commit random gruesome murders. But something about The Movies makes you root for the characters, even if they’re evil. We really want Cooper to escape the huge concert venue.

The FirstOntario Centre in Hamilton, Ontario, is pretending to be Shyamalan’s beloved Philadelphia. Careful observers will notice Riley and Cooper’s pretzels are not Philly-style. Shayamalan’s greatest sin on film. However, watching Hartnett try to stay calm while he’s screaming inside is great, and the screenplay enjoys throwing several ridiculous curveballs to build tension.

Riley freaks out because she loves Lady Raven (Saleka singing her own songs), and Shyamalan uses many of his classic close-ups to pause the suspense but highlight fandom. It’s a nice touch that becomes relevant to the plot in the second half in ways no true critic would write in a first-look review. Everyone knows to expect the unexpected from M. Night Shyamalan, and this movie is happy to pick itself up and dance into unexpected sequences.

This film celebrates pop music culture and has some darker moments. Trap uses British actress Hayley Mills as a brilliant FBI criminologist to investigate evil. She may have gotten the job because Shyamalan thought her most famous film, The Parent Trap, was funny. While these scenes slow down the story, they’re so basic that it’s hard to get upset.

Unlike Shyamalan’s recent films Old and Knock at the Cabin, Trap lacks the gut-wrenching weirdness. Like The Visit or Split, it’s enjoyable and has some story similarities. It’s well-shot, with wide angles, cropped frames, and a foreboding concert venue. It won’t be a spoiler to say that we leave the arena, and the amplified performances make mundane environments unsettling. Kid Cudi and Russell “Russ” Vitale as pop stars provide some comic relief, and Alison Pill as Cooper’s wife adds edge. Shyamalan makes a typical “am I actually controlling all of this?” cameo.

Is it okay to support the villain? Avoid that view of Trap. Consider it a storytelling challenge. How can a cornered man escape? Cooper and M. Night Shyamalan answer that question with surprising answers. Grade: B+
