The Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show returned to the runway on Tuesday after a six-year hiatus, bringing Tyra Banks and the Hadid sisters back.

From 1995 to 2018, the lingerie company’s promotional event, featuring its “angels” models, was primetime viewing.

However, executives cancelled it in 2019 amid body positivity, transgender rights, and #MeToo backlash in the fashion industry.

L Brands’ CEO Les Wexner’s association with sex offender Jeffrey Epstein and then-Chief Marketing Officer Ed Razek’s comments about transgender and plus-size models also plagued the company. He apologised and resigned that year.

Victoria’s Secret announced a fall return in May 2024.

Company values have changed, and the updated event will “reflect who we are today, plus everything you know and love — the glamour, runway, wings, musical entertainment, and more!”

The 45-minute show, streamed on Amazon Prime Video and social media, featured its first all-women musical lineup.

Cher closed the show with “Strong Enough” and “Believe.” LISA, Tyla, and Cher performed.

Famous angels like Gigi and Bella Hadid, Jasmine Tookes, Behati Prinsloo, Barbara Palvin, Taylor Hill, Candice Swanepoel, and Adriana Lima returned after retiring in 2018. Claudia Schiffer walked again after the 1997 show.

Kate Moss, 50, and former first lady of France Carla Bruni, 56, made their Victoria’s Secret runway debuts on Tuesday.

As a late-30s mother of three, model and body activist Ashley Graham said she was “over the moon” to be featured in her first Victoria’s Secret show and looked forward to representing curvy women.

Graham told People that she was hesitant to accept the invitation “because there has been a brand DNA that’s been very hard to be a part of for so many years, for so many of us.”

“When I talked to Victoria’s Secret’s head and they said they wanted extended sizes, I said yes so more women could see themselves on the runway because we didn’t see that during Fashion Month,” she said.

Former angel Tyra Banks, Victoria’s Secret’s first Black contract and cover model, walked in nine shows before retiring in 2005 to focus on television.

She returned nearly two decades later with a metallic cape and her signature smile to roars of applause from the audience and other models.

Social media fans embraced that moment. Critics criticised the show for being less inclusive, especially of plus-size models, than promised.

Victoria’s Secret has struggled financially in recent years as competition in the mid-range lingerie market has grown and younger shoppers have lost interest in the brand.
