The American ambassador says Evan Gershkovich is strong after a year in Russian prison.

News

Despite the fact that he has been detained in Moscow for more than a year, Evan Gershkovich, a journalist for “The Wall Street Journal,”

continues to remain resilient, according to the announcement made by the American embassy following the meeting that took place on Thursday between him and Lynne Tracy, the American ambassador to Russia.

According to reports, Gershkovich, who was 32 years old at the time, was taken into custody on March 29, 2023 in the city of Yekaterinburg while he was in Russia for the purpose of preparing a report.

According to the Russian authorities, he was arrested for espionage on the grounds that he was attempting to obtain information for a Russian defense business, which they consider to be a state secret.

The allegations of espionage have been categorically refuted by the journalist in question, as well as by the organization known as “The Wall Street Journal” and the government of the United States respectively.

This next week will mark the one-year anniversary of the unlawful arrest that he was subjected to by the Russian authorities. “Evan continues to be strong and show resilience despite the challenges he has faced, but it is tragic that he is waiting to stand trial and be tried for a crime he did not commit,” the United States Embassy in Russia stated in a post on the Telegram network that was written in Russian.

All of the requests that the journalist Gershkovich has made so far have been denied. at these requests, he has expressed his disapproval of being detained at the Lefortovo jail in Moscow while he awaits trial on espionage charges that carry a maximum sentence of twenty years in prison.

Gershkovich, a journalist, and Paul Whelan, a former United States Marine, were both found guilty of espionage in 2020. Washington has pledged to “do everything necessary” to get them back to the United States. In a Russian prison, he is currently serving a term of sixteen years. The allegations of espionage have been contradicted by him.

Vladimir Putin, the President of Russia, has suggested that a journalist named Gershkovich could be released in exchange for a Russian citizen who is currently being held in a foreign prison; but, as of yet, no such agreement has been struck.

After visiting him in prison in Moscow, the United States ambassador stated that Evan Gershkovich, a reporter for the Wall Street Journal, is “strong and resilient” in the face of the one-year anniversary of his imprisonment by Russia on espionage allegations that are widely regarded as being politically motivated.

While on a reporting assignment in the city of Yekaterinburg in the Urals, Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) took Gershkovich, who was 32 years old at the time, into custody on March 29. Despite the fact that Moscow has not provided any additional information, he is being accused of attempting to obtain defense secrets.

In a decision that was handed down just over a year after his detention, a Russian court mandated that he must continue to serve his sentence in prison until at least March 30.

Over the course of the following week, it will be one year since the Russian authorities unlawfully detained him. It is a tragedy that Evan is waiting to be tried for a crime that he did not commit, but he continues to be strong and resilient,” the United States Embassy in Russia said in a statement that was published on its Telegram channel in Russian.

In the Lefortovo prison in Moscow, he is being confined in a cell that is designed for two people. The date of his trial has not yet been determined. Should he be found guilty, he may be sentenced to a maximum of twenty years in prison. They have all rejected the allegations that have been made against him, including Gershkovich, The Wall Street Journal, and Washington.

Gershkovich was “wrongfully detained for… simply doing his job as a journalist,” according to the publication, and any portrayal to the contrary is considered to be fabrication. As a journalist from the United States, he is the first person since the end of the Cold War to be charged with espionage by Russia.

It has been stated by Vice President Biden that he will do “whatever it takes” to get him back home. A former United States Marine named Paul Whelan, who was sentenced to sixteen years in prison in 2020 on espionage allegations that he also denies, is another individual that Washington is attempting to secure the release of. Both of these individuals have been deemed “wrongfully detained” by the White House.

A month ago, President Putin made a suggestion that Gershkovich could be traded for a Russian “patriot” who, according to him, had “eliminated a bandit” in Europe. Vadim Krasikov, a high-ranking colonel in the FSB security service, was an individual who was supposed to be the subject of his statement. Krasikov is currently receiving a life sentence in Germany for the heinous crime of murdering a Chechen dissident in Berlin in 2019. The crime was committed in 2019.

In the aftermath of the death of opposition leader Alexei Navalny, who passed away in an Arctic prison a month ago, his supporters announced that he was scheduled to be traded for Krasikov, and that two unknown residents of the United States were also scheduled to be released as part of the agreement. After some time had passed, the White House stated that Russia had not brought up the issue.

The arrest of Gershkovich in Russia occurred after the majority of western journalists had fled the country as a result of an unprecedented assault on media freedoms that followed the invasion of Ukraine.

Xavier Colas, a journalist who worked for the daily El Mundo in Spain, was kicked out of Russia last week after the Russian police issued a warning to him to stop reporting on demonstrations that were held by the wives of troops who had been mobilized. As a result of Russia’s refusal to extend his work visa, he was given a 24-hour window in which to depart the country, according to him.
