This 2016 film has had 24 remakes worldwide, according to the Guinness Book of Records. In 2017, Álex de la Iglesia directed a Spanish adaptation of Paolo Genovese’s comedy ‘Perfetti Sconosciuti’, titled ‘Perfect Strangers’. Netflix and Prime Video offer it.The film was remade in Germany,

Japan, China, South Korea, Greece, India, and Armenia. The Weinstein Company acquired the rights, but the tragic events that affected its owner, Harvey Weinstein, and led to the company’s bankruptcy prevented this Hollywood-style version from being filmed in the US.

Almost all versions involve a dinner party between four couples, lifelong friends, where a game is proposed to reveal many of their worst secrets. They must read each other’s cell phone messages and answer calls during dinner. The pact will cause chaos and challenge many of the group’s loyalties.

Alex de la Iglesia’s film, starring Belén Rueda, Ernesto Alterio, Eduard Fernández, Eduardo Noriega, and Pepón Nieto, grossed 20.7 million euros, making it the director’s highest-grossing film. Genovese’s film was released in Spain a year later with a script and production similar to De La Iglesia’s.

The internet has been commemorating the release anniversary of ‘El día de la bestia’ for several weeks. Despite its 25th anniversary, the film remains a standout for its brutal rhythm, complex balance of humor and social satire, adherence to horror cinema codes, universal appeal, and Spanish authenticity. Many consider it Álex de la Iglesia’s best work.

I prefer the dark ‘Muertos de risa’, his second film after ‘Perdita Durango’, but ‘El día de la bestia‘ remains the Basque director’s most recognizable film. Today, his proposal is unchanged. Álex de la Iglesia’s revelation as a satanic action epic at the turn of the millennium cannot be fully understood without considering his debut, the more brutal and revolutionary ‘Acción mutua’.

Filmin has remastered ‘Acción mutua’, which was shot two years prior to ‘El día de la bestia‘ in distinct conditions. The film was produced by El Deseo, owned by Pedro Almodóvar, who by then had a defined style (‘Kika’, ‘La flor de mi deseo’, and ‘Tacones lejanos’) and wanted to use his own money to make films that were different from his own cinema. This and Guillermo del Toro’s ‘El espinazo del diablo’ are two of El Deseo’s most remembered films that border fantasy decades later.

Almodóvar’s influence is evident in scenes like the wedding, where he used a costume design similar to his own ‘Kika’ from the same year. He also features supporting actors like Bibí Andersen and Rossy De Palma. De la Iglesia’s intentions are opposite those of Almodóvar, because the La Mancha producer may be more comfortable among the wedding’s fauna than the terrorists who want to blow it up.

Álex de la Iglesia and Almodóvar did not collaborate again, possibly due to their differing cinematic visions. ‘Acción Mutante’ was a modest production that failed to meet box office expectations, costing 1.5 million euros and grossing only 1. After that, De la Iglesia earned 2.4 million euros with ‘El día de la bestia’ and 8 million with Perdita Durango (but that’s another story).
