Protesters against judicial reform attack Mexico's Senate, emulating Capitol assault.

Protesters threw themselves into the Senate in order to voice their opposition to contentious judicial reforms, which were ultimately approved.

It is imperative that senators put an end to the dictatorship. On Tuesday, September 10, demonstrators seized the headquarters of the Mexican Senate to voice their opposition to a proposed reform of the judicial system. They did so while shouting slogans that were unfavorable to the outgoing president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO). On January 6, 2021, extreme followers of Republican Donald Trump carried out an attack on the Capitol building. These images are suggestive of the attack.

With the implementation of the change, which was advocated for by the president who is on the left, Mexico would become the first nation in the world to elect all of its judges, including those who serve on the Supreme Court, through popular vote. In spite of the disturbances that occurred on Tuesday, it was ultimately approved by 86 votes in favor, which is equivalent to two-thirds of the 127 senators who were present in the upper chamber. The majority of the votes were cast by the ruling Morena party and its allies, while the opposition parties received 41 votes against it.

Relocation and adjournment of the session

As you can see in the video that we have provided above, several hundred demonstrators, carrying the Mexican flag, broke into the seat of the Mexican Senate the day before the adoption came into effect.

An extraordinary incident that brought to mind the rioters that broke into the Capitol in Washington, DC, with the intention of preventing Democrat Joe Biden from becoming the new Vice President of the United States. On the sixth of January, 2021, the demonstrators had entered the mythological monument where Congress is located. They had been emboldened by Donald Trump and false charges of electoral fraud.

After successfully breaching the security barricades that were in place in Mexico on Tuesday, a large number of demonstrators successfully compelled the president of the Senate, Gerardo Fernandez Noroña, who holds the authority of the presidential majority, to adjourn the session.

Almost immediately after that, Fernandez Noroña made the announcement that the session would be moved to the previous location of the Senate headquarters. “There will be a reform of the judiciary ,” he stated in addition. As the evening progressed, the debates resumed in the new facility, which was also the location where the demonstrators roamed around.

As a result of their belief that the reform will diminish the independence of judges and make them more susceptible to pressure from organized crime, the protestors, who are primarily striking judicial officials and law students, are opposed to the reform.

According to AMLO, “the judiciary is at the service of the powerful,” the statement reads.

“What most worries those who are against this reform is that they will lose their privileges, because the judiciary is at the service of the powerful (…) and white-collar crime,” AMLO, whose popularity is over 70%, criticized on Tuesday. A majority of those who are against this reform are concerned that they will lose their privileges.

On the international stage, the United States, which is Mexico’s primary trading partner, views the reform as a “risk” to Mexican democracy and “a threat” to bilateral commercial relations. This is due to the fact that Mexico has surpassed China as the most important trading partner for one of its northern neighbors.

At the end of August, the Mexican government “paused” its contacts with Ken Salazar, the United States ambassador to Mexico, who has openly attacked the reform on multiple occasions. The Mexican government also condemned what it called “interference” by the United States in its internal affairs.
