Two years later, the ‘Separation’ season 2 trailer has arrived. This is happening why?

I watched the first episode of a three-year-old series’ new season yesterday. It continued from where it stopped! I had to use my memory, and while it’s rare for a series to take so long to return, it’s not surprising that series are increasingly delaying new seasons. Changes in television are one of the most noticeable.

Severance 2. Yesterday, we got the first trailer for the second season of “Severance,” one of Apple TV +’s best series, which has taken two and a half years to return. This new trailer shows that it will continue the story linearly from the first season, which will leave viewers with many questions (beyond the trailer’s new enigmas): should I be surprised by such a character? Why does everyone know him but me?

Typical excuses. Remember that the Hollywood writers’ strike and COVID-19 have disrupted some schedules, but ‘Separation’ has had serious creative and focus issues, to the point that it was almost canceled last year. ‘Euphoria’, which was announced to have a new season a few months ago, was not initially affected by the strike, nor was ‘Stranger Things‘.

Customs vary by time. Those of us who remember linear television are still surprised by the long time between seasons. Before, we watched several seasons without knowing it or the series were renewed within a few months; ABC still does this. New customs carry risks.

Problems with delays. My inability to recall key details from the previous season is not solely due to my advanced age. Too much time between seasons makes it hard to build a loyal audience. West Wing producer John Wells told Vulture that “not having [new episodes] available for a long period of time is one of the reasons why shows decline rather than gain audiences, even those that have excelled in their first year.”

Costlier series. Why are these delays happening? Just look at the platforms’ programming—they all have a few blockbusters for Hollywood. ‘House of the Dragon’, ‘Stranger Things’, ‘The Boys’, ‘The Bridgerton’… Disney+ is the clearest. Although they are now making (welcome) cuts, their approach to the new Marvel and Star Wars series was similar in production and costs to the franchise’s films until recently. And that takes time. Due to dubbing and subtitling for international release, it can take almost a year for a film to reach the platform.

Lack of expertise. However, those series designed in the style of films and Netflix, Prime Video, and their paycheck-based talent search have made creative television stars less well-known. The Russo brothers, Ben Stiller, and Rian Johnson have arrived on television, bringing teams unaccustomed to television’s Stakhanovite deadlines. In Vulture, a TV executive says, “They lack the muscle to write eight or ten half-hour episodes. They lack fast and frequent writing experience.”

So what? It may be the end of this system. In recent months, streaming platforms have increased rates and banned shared accounts to cut costs, which will affect series. ‘Agatha, Who Else?’ and the new ‘Game of Thrones’ spin-off are steps in that direction. Wells is producing HBO’s medical drama ‘The Pitt’, which will run for 15 episodes and return in less than a year if renewed.

Netflix has adopted this profitable and efficient system, selling new seasons of ‘The Diplomat’ or ‘The Lincoln Lawyer’ within a year. If platforms want to avoid drowning in success, they should make series cheaper and less spectacular.
