: New Switch 2 leaks shorten launch window.

The new CES in Las Vegas has produced one of the most notable leaks of the Nintendo Switch successor. There, accessory manufacturers showed off realistic replicas of the next Nintendo console. Many make these mock-ups to show clients and the press their next releases’ features.

Genki is one of these manufacturers that has shown replicas of the Switch 2 behind closed doors, allowing the press to reveal that the new console will be larger than its predecessor. Other major changes include the Joy-Con’s magnetic attachment and detachment from the screen, unlike the first Switch.

In a video on its social media channels, French media outlet Numerama compares this mock-up to the previous console. Rumours about the launch date have also circulated, citing April 2025 (which apparently began at Genki presentations), which is earlier than previously thought.

If this date is real or close to what Nintendo has in mind (the chances are high: a couple of months before summer is the best time of the year for a console like the Switch 2), the company has little time to announce. If it wants a convincing marketing campaign, it should announce the console in January or early February and reveal both the hardware and the launch catalogue, the biggest and most anticipated surprise for the new console.

The next Nintendo console was revealed after weeks of rumours and leaks.

The Japanese video game giant released a short video of the new console, confirming some unofficial rumours.

As expected, Switch 2 will have a larger screen and detachable controllers like its predecessor.

Existing Switch games can be played on the new machine, but not all are cross-compatible.

The video also showed a new Mario Kart game and suggested magnetic controller attachments and upgraded joysticks.

Nintendo promised more details at a Direct showcase on 2 April.Nintendo’s first Switch sold 143 million units by September 2024, making it one of the best-selling home consoles ever.

Switch sales transformed Nintendo’s hardware business.

Its follow-up to the massively successful Wii was a flop, and some analysts predicted the company would become a software publisher like Sega.

Switch’s hybrid mechanic appealed to gamers.

Nintendo developed several “must-have” games, including new Mario and Legend of Zelda games, for the console, which was weaker than the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

The cosy, escapist life sim Animal Crossing: New Horizons was a hit during the COVID-19 pandemic, helping it, like other games companies.

Does Switch 2 guarantee success?
Nintendo experienced “second album syndrome” with the 2012 Wii U, which failed after its success.

George Osborn, consultant and author of the Video Games Industry Memo newsletter, told BBC Newsbeat about his Switch 2 predictions.

He predicted many eager gamers would buy the console upon launch.

He said: “Nintendo has managed to establish a very strong audience of families buying consoles.”

George said it would be hard to convince casual users to upgrade if the Switch 2 wasn’t a technological leap.

“I think there’ll be a lot of families who are going, ‘Well, I’m perfectly happy with this family device, it serves my needs, I can keep up on this,” said.
