Netflix has made Kevin Costner’s thriller-western mashup

Kevin Costner’s career has been rocky recently. In addition to blockbusters like ‘Yellowstone’, ambitious projects like ‘Horizon: An American Saga’ have bombed at the box office. The second film, already shot, has no release date. Four years ago, ‘One of Us’ suffered a similar fate, but Netflix is rescuing it.

Costner’s thriller-western was released in 2020, the pandemic year, and only recovered 11 of its 21 million budget. Luckily, Netflix made it one of Spain’s most watched films last Christmas, making it easier for many viewers to watch.

We follow a retired sheriff and his wife as they grieve their son. Since their daughter-in-law has remarried, this time to a powerful family member whose matriarch won’t let the boy return to his grandparents, they will travel to North Dakota to retrieve him.

The protagonists’ stellar performances carry the film. Costner is matched by Diane Lane as his volatile wife, determined not to let her grandson suffer. A charismatic Lesley Manville as the clan matriarch opposes them in a well-deserved interpretive duel.

Kevin Costner’s Western Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1 was a Netflix hit after a poor box office.

The epic Western, the first of a four-part saga, follows Midwestern characters during the Civil War. The ensemble stars Sienna Miller, Sam Worthington, Giovanni Ribisi, and Danny Huston.

The film, which was shot back-to-back with the second installment, grossed $38.2 million against a $50 million budget after its June release.

The film has been in Netflix’s top 10 global rankings for the past week despite only being available to US subscribers, despite its poor theatrical performance.

The film ranks seventh with 4 million streams, behind Carry-On (17.4 million) and The Six Triple Eight (10.8 million).

After its underperformance, the second chapter was pulled from the schedule a month before its August release. The streamer’s success may revive the saga.

“The audience response to Horizon, and enthusiasm for seeing our story continue in Horizon 2, has been incredibly gratifying,” said Costner’s Territory Pictures spokesperson. Kevin made this film for movie lovers who wanted to travel.

“Film fans and theatre owners’ support as they experience the first chapter of this saga only reinforces our belief in them and our films, and we thank them for coming on board for the ride,” they added.

We welcome expanding that window because we know it will improve Horizon 2’s experience.
