Netflix explains 'The Umbrella Academy'

Netflix’s quirky superhero series is over, with some questions answered.

The unusual Netflix superhero series ‘The Umbrella Academy’ based on Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá’s comic has ended. This finale departs from the comics’ original story because the series has gone beyond what the comics told. Steve Blackman, the series’ producer and showrunner, has worked hard to wrap up the Hargreeves siblings’ story.

To this final episode, how? Five finds the series’ long-hidden apocalypse roots. Contrary to popular perception, all the brothers caused the apocalypse, not Viktor. From a multiverse perspective, the catastrophe repeats itself in every timeline because none of them should exist. Reginald Hargreeves formed this dysfunctional superhero family by freeing the Marigold to resurrect his beloved Abigail.

A material opposite Ben’s Marigold brings Jennifer, the Durango, formed at the same time. The Hargreeves must fight Jennifer and Ben’s monster when the Durango and Marigold respond after their reunion. Five runs to the multiverse rail network when he realizes he cannot halt the disaster. He finds a cafeteria full of his clones, who describe the apocalypse’s true genesis, inevitability, and the Hargreeves’ 145,412 failed attempts to stop it.

It will dissolve and so would our heroes if they let this substance react with the Marigold in their bodies. They will avert the end. After a tearful goodbye, they let the Durango eat the Marigold they carry, and the series ends with the basic universe remaining. The series’ characters—some deceased, like the Swedes paid to kill Number Five—have vastly varied fates.

Additionally, the post-credits sequence. Simple, yet it opens the door for a sequel: the spilled Marigold grows flowers. Eight, full of it like the siblings. One can hope the Hargreeves will resurrect. Netflix has already finished the series, so it won’t be there.

With this ending, how were Diego, Lila, and Allison’s daughter born without the Hargreeves? One of the series’ unknowns, it seems to suggest that death, a sacrifice, is not non-existence that changes the cosmos. Can someone be a hero without existing? That seems to wrap up ‘The Umbrella Academy’s fourth and final season.

Umbrella Academy season 4’s six-episode finale was always going to be heartbreaking. After becoming devoted to the strange and fascinating Hargreeves throughout the years, many fans were confused, indignant, and upset with the finale for numerous reasons.

Season four begins with the Umbrella Academy (Luther, Klaus, Diego, Allison, Number Five, Ben, Victor, and Lila) in a reset timeline without their powers, skipping six years to reveal the Hargreeves’ different lives.

The gang reunites to rescue Jennifer (Victoria Sawal), who turns out to be the identical Jennifer from the “Jennifer incident” that killed Ben in the OG Umbrella Academy timeline.

In the original timeline, the Hargreeves were ordered to find and detonate a lethal device in a container, but Ben opened it and pulled Jennifer out. After disobeying his adopted father Sir Reginald Hargreeves, Ben shot him and Jennifer immediately.

Reginald didn’t want them to interact with Jennifer since she has Durango, a particle element. When Durango combines with the Marigold that gives the Hargreeves their powers, the two elements form The Cleanse, a catastrophic event that could destroy the world, unintentionally caused by Abigail, the Reginald’s wife. Ah, okay Reg.

Cleanse
When Sparrow Academy Ben spikes his adopted brothers’ glasses with Marigold, he gives them their powers back and starts a chain of events.

After Ben and Jennifer bond, The Cleanse begins, transforming them into a horrific creature.

Five learns from an alternate version of himself that the siblings are directly responsible for the infinite number of timelines, with the Marigold that infected their birth mothers fracturing the original timeline into countless alternative loops.
