Marvel learns from 'Deadpool and Wolverine

What we know about the ‘Fantastic Four’ and what we are witnessing in successful films like ‘Deadpool and Wolverine’ both point in that direction.

At Marvel, the winds of change are blowing in new directions. And there is a valid explanation for this: the dismal performance of the firm over the past few years (nearly always performing well at the box office, but giving the overall impression that the company is unable to live up to an event like the last two Avengers films) has led to the solitary parenthesis in which we currently find ourselves. ‘Deadpool and Wolverine’ is the only Marvel Cinematic Universe film that has been released in the year 2024.

A pause that persists for some time. In fact, it is not a full stop but rather a weird parenthesis. Firstly, since the third chapter of ‘Deadpool’ is already a novelty in and of itself: its narrative that persistently breaks the fourth wall and regards the rest of the Marvel Cinematic Universe characters as fictions has served, with a wink, to raise a single comment on Marvel itself. The film is the first Disney picture to feature the return of Fox characters, including Wolverine and the mutants, which are more symbolic in nature. The last point, which is also very significant, is that it has been a tremendous success at the box office. The continuity of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is ensured by this impasse.

There is no homework. A little more than a year ago, Feige admitted that one of the major issues with the Marvel Cinematic Universe was that audiences frequently had the impression that they were required to carry homework with them in order to enjoy the new movies. For a period of time, particularly after the launch of Disney+, this was the situation: the frustrated Kang tale was incomprehensible if you hadn’t seen the full Loki series and Quantumania, which is the third installment of a three-part narrative about a certain superhero. In this regard, the multiverse as a whole is a complete and utter mess: we continue to come across movies and television shows that make references to a series such as “Wandavision,” which was on the small screen some years ago.In reality, exhaustion is a form of laziness.

Not only is there a lot of talk about the exhaustion of the superhero formula, but what is buried behind it is not the tiredness of the formula itself; rather, it is the laziness of the viewer in the face of the necessity to watch series or films that do not interest him in order to understand those that do intrigue him. The multiverse story, with all of its potential, is highlighting this feeling, despite the fact that its most acclaimed pieces, such as “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” were chosen specifically because they did not require the viewer to be familiar with many series.

One of the opportunities is “doomsday.” The term “doomsday” develops as a result of both necessity and strategy. The Kang tale was unable to continue since Jonathan Majors was fired, hence it was necessary to use a different Marvel villain in order to continue the story. In addition to the fact that Robert Downey Jr. will be in charge of bringing the legendary foe of the Fantastic Four to life, this also gives a chance for Marvel: two years after the release of “Avengers: Doomsday,” we still do not know anything about her. For a difference, it is refreshing to see that even if they wanted to, they would not have the time to design three series on Disney+ in order to set the groundwork for the advent of Doom.

They are determined to go their own way, the Fantastic Four. And all of this is bolstered by the film “Fantastic Four: First Steps,” which is the film of Marvel’s most iconic family. It has already been stated that, despite the fact that it will undoubtedly build argumentative bridges to other Marvel Cinematic Universe films (the presence of Doom himself is very likely to be brought forward there), it functions in its own independent universe, which is a kind of retro-futuristic sixties. It is a relief that the picture is constructed from a fresh slate, rather than being the culmination of a dozen other plot arcs that have come before it. Of course, they will eventually come face to face with the other Marvel characters at some time.

On the other hand, ‘Deadpool’… On the other hand, there are those who believe that all of that is very nice; however, “Deadpool and Wolverine” is a movie that is full of references; if you have not seen “Logan,” you will not understand it; you will need to “do your homework”… and while this is true, what is required is a general knowledge of Marvel, and the plot can be understood without the need to be a fan. Naturally, it is a movie that is made by and for fans, but the fact that it has been so successful makes it abundantly evident that it does not shut the doors in anyone’s face… and even if it does at some point, it closes it with a laugh, which is always a better way to end things.

Which comes next? As Marvel is currently entrenched in a certain level of obscurity, it is difficult to forecast what the company’s next steps will be. We know, for instance, that “Thunderbolts” will be a Marvel-style version of “Suicide Squad,” and while it is true that it will feature a large number of characters from other movies, it will be entirely feasible to comprehend it without having to watch all of the movies in which those characters have appeared in the past.

In this regard, “Agatha, who else?” is a sequel series to the first Marvel production for Disney+, which was titled “Wandavision.” In this respect, it is almost as if it symbolizes the end of an era. Nevertheless, the shift in mood and style appears to be abundant in terms of the prospect of delight that it may provide as an individual series. In the year 2025, Marvel has the ability to do what its everlasting rival, DC, has always done: reopen the doors of the house so that everyone can come in and play. A modest step into the unknown, but one that has the potential to bring you a great deal of happiness.
