Louisiana delays Ten Commandments in classrooms.

(Baton Rouge) A federal judge accepted a deal on Friday that will cause Louisiana to postpone implementing its policy mandating that a copy of the Ten Commandments be put in every public school classroom in the state until at least November.

Parents of children attending public schools in Louisiana who practice other religions filed a lawsuit in June. They claimed that the First Amendment of the US Constitution, which forbids the establishment of religion by the government and upholds religious freedom, is violated by the law.

Since the Ten Commandments are historical and form the basis of American law, proponents of the law contend that they should be taught in schools.

A similar Kentucky statute was declared unconstitutional by the US Supreme Court in 1980. The US Constitution allows Congress to “make no law respecting an establishment of religion.” The court determined that the law served a religious aim rather than having a secular goal.

The Supreme Court declared in 2005 that these kinds of displays at two courthouses in Kentucky were unconstitutional. Nonetheless, the highest court in the United States permitted the keeping of a copy of the Ten Commandments on the grounds of the Texas State Capitol in Austin.

According to a deal reached on Friday, Louisiana will postpone putting a new law into effect in select schools that mandates the Ten Commandments be displayed in every public classroom.

Days after Gov. Jeff Landry signed the new law last month, parents of children attending public schools in Louisiana from a variety of religious backgrounds filed a lawsuit contesting it. They said that the requirement went against Supreme Court rulings that supported the separation of church and state and was unconstitutional.

The defendants, which included five school boards, members of the Louisiana State Board of Elementary and Secondary Education, and Louisiana State Superintendent of Education Cade Brumley, consented to postpone hanging Ten Commandments posters in schools until after November 15. Additionally, according to the agreement filed in U.S. District Court for Middle District of Louisiana, the named state education authorities will not “promulgate advice, rules, or regulations regarding proper implementation of the challenged statute” until that time.

However, Lester Duhé, a spokesman for the Louisiana Attorney General, informed USA TODAY that the deadline of January 1st for all schools to hang the posters remains in effect.In order to give the trial and decision more time, he said, the defendants consented to the delayed implementation…

The new law in Louisiana, which was sponsored by Republican state representative Dodie Horton and signed by Landry, also a Republican, requires all educational institutions receiving state funding to display the religious regulations in “large, easily readable font” on posters that are the size of posters.

Horton stated to the USA Today Network on Friday, “I’m confident we will prevail in court.”

According to the order, U.S. District Court Judge John deGravelles will schedule a hearing for September 30 and expects to render a decision by mid-November.

The Ten Commandments law from Louisiana gains national attention.

The Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, who expressed his support for the new law last month in a speech and on social media, is among those who have expressed strong interest in and attention to the legislation nationwide.

The Rev. Darcy Roake, a plaintiff in the lawsuit, said in a statement, “The Ten Commandments displays required by state law will create an unwelcoming and oppressive school environment for children, like ours, who don’t believe in the state’s official version of scripture.”

“Including the Ten Commandments in the education of our children is part of our state and national history, culture, and tradition,” the law’s text states, describing the Ten Commandments’ “historical role.”

At the bill-signing ceremony, Landry declared, “You have to start from the original law given, which was Moses, if you want to respect the rule of law.”

When USA TODAY asked the governor for comment on Friday, the governor did not immediately reply.

Some states have attempted to compel schools to display the Ten Commandments.

Louisiana is not the first state to attempt the contentious mandate, but it is the only one of its sort in the nation. Over the years, similar measures have been introduced in over a dozen states.

A statute mandating the Ten Commandments to be posted in all public elementary and secondary school classrooms was passed by Kentucky lawmakers in 1978. The law was upheld by a Kentucky state trial court and state supreme court, but in a 5-4 ruling in November 1980, the U.S. Supreme Court decided against it.

A bill that would have included the Ten Commandments to the list of historical texts that “a teacher or administrator in any school in this state may read or post in any school building” was submitted earlier this year in Arizona. The law was approved by the House on April 2 and the state Senate on February 21. “Not only do I have serious concerns about the constitutionality of this legislation, but it is also unnecessary,” Governor Katie Hobbs wrote in her veto letter on April 16.
