Live music was banned from TV for years

Lost from television for years, a woman returned. No, not Amaia.

Besides ending ‘El hormiguero’s audience figure dictatorship, ‘La revuelta’ has brought new ingredients to daily access (or “authentic prime time” from now on). As we’ve mentioned before, an age group in the audience has often avoided television until now.

Music, yes. Live music has also helped Broncano’s program (we’ll leave the quality of approaches and guests to another day, which are subjective). Many artists, including Danna Paola, Ana Mena, Israel Fernández, Judeline, and Carín León, have performed live on stage. Sonya Yoncheva, a soprano, and Biznaga, a punk singer, were among the most talked about because it was unusual for them to sing live on television. Amaia’s leaving before the holidays has been the most talked about.

Touring the stage. The Navarra artist performed her new single, ‘Tengo un pensamiento’, acapella without warning, hiding her “gift” verses as those traditionally exchanged between David Broncano and his guests. The song gradually adds keyboard, winds, strings, and choirs as the artist leaves the stage, crosses the audience, and arrives at the street, where a band awaits her. Jorge Prieto, the steadycam operator, shared this rehearsal video of a sequence shot of notorious complexity and mathematical preparation.

3 days of practice. What VerTele says it cost to prepare this spectacular performance. The production company of the program owned by David Broncano and Jorge Ponce, Encofrados Encofrasa, coordinated 13 musicians, 24 choristers, and 40 extras in the recording. This result was achieved by ‘La Revuelta’ with ten more people than usual.

Olden times. The way ‘La Revuelta’ treats live music is reminiscent of television, when a musician’s performance was a chance to show off his talent, not to go crazy. ‘Aplauso’, ‘Popgram’a, and ‘Musical Express’ reflected a time when music was the main form of entertainment. Only isolated programs like the veteran ‘Los concierto de Radio 3’, also on La 2, and occasional moments in late-night programs with a band remain as tastes and music understanding have changed. ‘La Revuelta’s pure form, with top-notch artists and prime time, has not been seen in years.

Also on ‘El Hormiguero’. ‘El Hormiguero’ has also been performed live, usually by international singers invited to Pablo Motos’ show. Hombres G, Yerai Cortés, and Robbie Williams have performed live, but Antena 3’s format limits it. Undoubtedly, Broncano’s program gives lesser-known artists from less mainstream genres a privileged time slot. However, both deserve credit for bringing live music to TV.

The numbers again. None of this is enough for ‘La Revuelta’ or ‘El Hormiguero’ to declare themselves winners of the months-long duel. Again, Broncano beat Motos in the coincidental time slot yesterday with 15.7% share and 2,002,000 viewers to 15.3% and 1,963,000. Despite only 31,000 more viewers and 15.4% share compared to 15.1%, ‘El Hormiguero’ averaged more for the day. Both ended this way before the holidays in a tight season from which we can extract data.

An assessment of damage. In an analysis published today by Barlovento Comunicación, ‘La Revuelta’ has averaged 15.7% share and 2,054,000 viewers in these months, compared to 15.6% and 2,036,000 for ‘El Hormiguero’. Broncano has 16.3% share in the strictly coincidental time slot, compared to 15% for ‘El Hormiguero’. Any competition that gives viewers gifts like Amaia’s is healthy.
