From the start, the supposed three Las Nenas members were named Viviana, Claudia, and Naiara, all with AI in their names. The group gained attention with their first album, ‘Último baño’, but it was later revealed that the music was entirely generated by AI. Beyond the formal consequences of Spotify removing their songs, the phenomenon’s uniqueness forces us to rethink creativity’s limits and scope.

Three nonexistent humans. The group became popular after an elDiario.es interview. Since their sound and members were mysterious, the group partially removed their masks to quell suspicions and rumors about their legitimacy. Humans write their songs’ lyrics, but AI interprets the music and voices, according to their anonymous leaders. In a newspaper article explaining the deception, they explained, “Since the questionnaire did not talk about how we made the musical part of our songs, we did not feel that we had to warn about the non-human part of our artistic project.”

Off Spotify. Altafonte, Las Nenas’ digital distributor, removed them from Spotify, Deezer, Apple Music, and Youtube for failing to disclose their identity when they hired them. From December 18, the songs will return to platforms like Bandcamp, where they never left. The non-band announced on Instagram that they are changing distributors. A legal setback that prevents the group from collecting song royalties, as stated in its manifesto.

Be Las Nenas. Their manifesto claims that the experiment is a game: “Las Nenas’ intention was never to deceive anyone, but to enjoy some songs that we started making as a game and that seemed so good to us that we wanted to share them.” Remember that “the lyrics are 100% human, even though the music is 95% inhuman, as are the covers and videos.” Final instructions, including prompts, allow anyone to compose Las Nenas songs with the Udio app.

Is everyone Las Nenas? The manifesto states that Las Nenas are now a collaborative project, which is their most intriguing approach. “If you manage to do something you like, you can send it to us by email because we would love to hear new songs from Las Nenas.” Forget the project’s possible financial goals, which were dashed before time. According to elDiario.es, people bought their album and paid real money while they were still pretending to be a group, which is dangerous. However, removing the initial deception may reveal the most intriguing aspect of generative AI exploitation.

Toilet reference. According to our colleague Santiago Sánchez-Migallón, if we agree that a turned and signed toilet is essential to understanding contemporary art and that remixing and fusion are creative tools as legitimate as the music sheet, AI should be used to shape ideas, steal others’ ideas to transform them, and create new expressions. Problems with ethics? As human creation has always had them: Duchamp never claimed to have built the toilet, which makes Las Nenas’ manifesto sound false and rash.

Misuse of others’ property. Generative AIs in creative fields like music, illustration, and comics have been controversial since their birth. Most of their inspiration comes from unlicensed authors. The controversy between human creators and AIs hinges on this unresolved issue. The side issue, but crucial, is that Las Nenas not only did not say they were not human, but that they passed themselves off as three women, which raises gender issues and recalls the Planeta Prize controversy over Carmen Mola, who was actually three men.
