"In the process of being concluded" Gaza ceasefire

A truce and agreement to free the hostages in Gaza are expected, according to a senior US source, ahead of negotiations between Joe Biden and Benjamin Netanyahu.

Before a ceasefire agreement in Gaza is finalized, only a few issues remain. A top American official said on Wednesday, July 24, that hostages could be released and the war would soon come to an end. This development in the talks coincides with the announcement that Joe Biden and Benjamin Netanyahu will meet at the White House on Thursday, July 25.

“We believe that it is on the way to a conclusion and that an agreement can be reached ,” he stated. He said there should be “a lot of activity in the coming week” to come to a decision. This Wednesday, Benjamin Netanyahu reiterated in front of Congress his goal of achieving a “total victory” over the terrorists from Hamas.

Given that Hamas has lowered its demands for a complete Israeli pullout, a potential truce now depends on a few details of how an agreement will be implemented, the official stated.

Following reports that Hamas has given early assent to a fresh US-backed proposal for a phased accord, hopes for a ceasefire in Gaza have increased even more.

According to reports from Reuters and the Associated Press, Hamas dropped a crucial demand that Israel pledge to a final end to the war before any respite in hostilities, as confirmed by Egyptian authorities and leaders of the militant Islamist organization.

With Washington, Israel, and Qatar coordinating mediation efforts from Doha, where the exiled Hamas leadership is based, efforts to arrange a ceasefire and the release of hostages in Gaza have stepped up in recent days.

The Hezbollah official declared, “There will be a ceasefire in Lebanon from zero hour if there is an agreement in Gaza.”

The most recent ceasefire request from Hamas has been hailed as a “breakthrough” by the White House. The head of Israel’s foreign intelligence agency, Mossad, was ordered to make an immediate trip to Qatar, as announced by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Friday. However, according to his office, there are still “gaps between the parties.”

In the first part of the proposed agreement, Israel would withdraw from Gazan cities, release Palestinian prisoners detained by Israel, and release old, sick, and female captives held by Hamas during a six-week truce.

Phases two and three might involve exchanging more Palestinian prisoners and detainees for the release of the last male captives, both soldiers and civilians. All hostages would eventually be freed, including the bodies of those who had died in captivity, and work on the very costly and intricate task of rebuilding Gaza would begin.

Widely divergent opinions on how the accord would transition from its first to its second phase had been a major roadblock to a compromise until this week.

The way to a lasting truce is one that Hamas is demanding strong guarantees for, but Netanyahu has publicly expressed doubts about it, pledging to destroy the organization completely. The group had ruled Gaza for almost 20 years prior to its October 7 surprise onslaught on southern Israel.

The group’s consent, according to a Hamas spokesperson speaking to the Associated Press, was contingent upon receiving “verbal commitments and guarantees” from the mediators that the war would not be renewed and that talks would carry on until a lasting ceasefire was achieved. He stated, “Now we want these guarantees on paper.”

Following an October raid by Hamas, in which terrorists poured into southern Israel, killing 1,200 people, largely civilians, and kidnapping nearly 250 more, Israel declared war on Gaza.

Since then, over 38,000 people have died in Gaza as a result of the Israeli air and ground offensive; the health ministry of the territory does not differentiate between combatants and civilians when calculating this number.
While observers acknowledged that any advancement was positive, they also noted that almost seven months and numerous rounds of negotiations had not resulted in a deal.

Pressure to halt the war is strong as an all-out confrontation between Israel and Hezbollah looms as the number of casualties in Gaza continues to rise.

Echoing earlier remarks, a Hezbollah official declared last week that the organization would put an end to hostilities as soon as any agreement on Gaza came into force. The organization supported by Iran launched 200 rockets into Israel on Thursday in response for an attack that claimed the life of one of its top leaders.
