IMDb and Rotten Tomatoes recommend 5 animated films

Christmas is here, and many countries celebrate. We present five IMDb and Rotten Tomatoes-rated Christmas animated films for family time.

Toy Story, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, and How to Train Your Dragon take their inspiration from over a century ago. Flip books and zoetropes showed humans how animation captivated them before films were invented in the late 19th century. If you want to go back in time, prehistoric cave art shows animals with too many legs moving when illuminated by fire. It may be the first animation.

Human nature dictated that animation and cinema grew together from the start. The Internet age made it inevitable that someone would rank the best feature-length animated films from the 20th century and beyond and call the guide the 140 Essential Animated Movies Ever to Watch Right Now! All mediums are represented here, from cel (Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, The Land Before Time) to 3-D (Toy Story, Shrek), rotoscoped (Tower, A Scanner Darkly), stop-motion (Chicken Run, Fantastic Mr. Fox), oil canvas (Loving Vincent), and mixed media. Because animation is often associated with specific studios, we have represented Disney (Beauty and the Beast, Sleeping Beauty), Pixar (WALL-E, Finding Dory), DreamWorks (How to Train Your Dragon, Kung Fu Panda), Studio Ghibli, and others.

How was the “Essential” 140 chosen? We considered reviews, other “best of” lists, cultural impact, and editorial discretion. They had to contribute to the medium’s history, not just be good (some aren’t). Even though style and artistic tastes change, these films have been passed down for generations. Parents and kids watch them together, making them family traditions. These films advanced animation and inspired people to write, draw, or stylise their own colourful stories.

Tomatometer scores were not a factor in ranking (besides the fact that it needed one), only feature films were considered, and films with some live-action (The LEGO Movie, James and the Giant Peach) were fine as long as they were mostly animated.

You’ll also find thrilling adventures (Jungle Book, Sword in the Stone), experimental years (Black Cauldron, Oliver and Company), second golden age (Aladdin, The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King), second dark age (Treasure Planet, Home on the Range), and digital fun (Bolt, Big Hero 6) before returning to the princesses. Disney’s Tomatometer highs and lows span decades, so you won’t do it in that order.
