If Broncano and Motos fought over Jorge Martín's interview

Violence is rising, but this week’s numbers speak for themselves.

Last Thursday, ‘La Revuelta’ and ‘El Hormiguero’ clashed over Jorge Martín’s non-visit to Broncano’s program, leading to strategic moves by both programs. Almost a week later, we can assess audience reaction.

Biker won’t arrive. Last Thursday, David Broncano announced that Moto GP world champion Jorge Martín would not be interviewed, as previously announced. Through unspecified pressures (“some things would happen,” said the biker), ‘El Hormiguero’ prevented him from attending Broncano’s program before Motos‘ this week. In an unexpected turn, ‘La Revuelta‘ ended with twelve minutes of deer rutting footage instead of an interview.

Motos replies. Pablo Motos responded to Broncano’s accusations on Monday, saying that behind the controversy were “interests and smokescreens” and accusing the government of using Broncano’s program to avoid discussing more important issues. According to him, the pilot interview was “closed and agreed” but he did not address the lingering question of whether Martín had an exclusive commitment. He supported his speech with media headlines (some of which were unreliable) and was criticized for avoiding Broncano’s accusation, especially since common currency in negotiations does not mean well done.

Even prompter reacts. TVE’s Silvia Intxaurrondo quickly corrected Pablo Motos’ speech, which lied when he said that RTVE’s newscasts had opened with the controversy instead of more important news. Broncano predicted Motos’ speech almost entirely that day. Jorge Javier Vázquez wrote a bile-filled article about ‘Cuentos chinos’ cancellation. The subject has been between the lines in ‘La Revuelta’ and ‘El Hormiguero’ all week.

Audiences matter. Of course, none of this can determine a winner. The cultural wars continue as Motos supporters argue that public television should not troll the competition and Broncano supporters argue that political positioning is more important. Audience figures are fortunately in coincidental bands. VerTele data suggests they are surprising.

Clear win for Broncano. David Broncano won numerically. Audiences dropped on Tuesday and Wednesday due to Champions League matches. However, ‘El Hormiguero’ and ‘La Revuelta’ had fewer viewers than Monday due to the sporting events.

What does it all mean? On Monday, we said the controversy will continue as long as possible because both programs are benefiting, but Motos’ speech did not seem to affect Broncano’s audience, even on the day he replied. On Monday, ‘La Revuelta’ had its best ratings since September 16, its second week on the air, and “novelty” may have contributed. Being conspiracy-minded, everything seems to indicate that Broncano has done well in the controversy just as ‘El Hormiguero’ was about to win every day of the week. A full house that Broncano may achieve this week, a week after the controversy began.
