Helldivers 2 isn't done

Despite dropping Steam player counts, Arrowhead Game Studios is devoted to Helldivers 2.

Success brings praise, but it also attracts problems. Helldivers 2 was one of 2024’s biggest blockbusters a few months ago, but now it appears to be dead or in ruins. This sudden transformation is due to an old friend that impacts any unique video game.

Helldivers 2 on SteamDB has 36,440 players in the previous 24 hours and 22,240 concurrent players as of this writing, shocking the video game industry. While these are lower than its launch figures of 458,709 Steam players, panicking now is playing a card that no longer works for many.

Many individuals have been claiming for days that Helldivers 2 is dead, in peril, or finished due to its 90% player loss. This has been repeated in videos, articles, and social media, so much so that Arrowhead Game Studios Community Manager Twinbeard has turned to Discord to answer this question and others, such as new content:

Reddit’s SublimeBear posted graphs, comparisons, and a perspective on Helldivers 2’s player decline, not satisfied with the Arrowhead CM’s words:

I was angry by all the trash videos about the “death of HD2” and about Steam graphics in other games, which weren’t comparable. I made a correct comparison. Comparing Helldivers 2 to similar games: Co-op PvE horde shooters.

This user compares Helldivers 2 to PAYDAY 2, Warhammer 40,000: Darkhide, Warframe, Back 4 Blood, Deep Rock Galactic, and Destiny 2. Inclusion of World War Z and Left 4 Dead would have been wise. Arrowhead Game Studios’ game routinely tops rankings, surpassing Warframe and Destiny 2, two amazing and well-known releases.

We must recall that Helldivers 2 sold over 12 million copies. This guarantees a player base and the return of those who now enjoy video games like Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree or The First Descendant.

Helldivers 2’s player count is also affected by Arrowhead Game Studios’ content delivery changes. They announced a pace change with the last War Bonus, Viper Commandos. Bonuses won’t always arrive the second week. They’ve constantly adding biomes and quests, which are less exciting than new weapons and armor.

Helldivers 2 will live on. Although the number of gamers has reduced, that doesn’t imply the end. I don’t think the figures are horrible. Not like a ceiling will fall and prevent it from rising again. It will do so when fresh content and big events like the Enlightened Ones arrive. I remind you that Helldivers survived for years with far less, and players still enjoy it.

An alarm or panic arises when a successful video game’s numbers plummet. Although upsetting, it is normal and inevitable. It’s impossible to always ride the wave.
