Four dead in high school shooting by 14-year-old

(Winder) On Wednesday, a 14-year-old boy opened fire at his high school in Georgia, in the southeastern region of the United States, killing four people—two kids his age and two teachers—and wounding nine more, according to law authorities.

The American Federal Police (FBI) released a report in 2023 regarding the alleged shooter, a 14-year-old schoolboy, citing threats to carry out a school shooting accompanied by images of firearms.

Emergency calls were received Wednesday morning, prompting law police to Apalachee High School in Winder, which is around 45 miles northeast of Atlanta, the state capital.

Local sheriff Jud Smith told reporters that the youngster had been apprehended by a police officer assigned to school security, and he later stated that the nine injured people would heal.

According to the sheriff, “the shooter quickly realized that if he didn’t surrender,” the officer would fire. “He gave up, got on the ground and the officer arrested him.”

According to the FBI, he was brought into custody and will face an adult murder trial.

This tragedy is a part of a macabre trend in the US, where a third of adults own a gun and school and university shootings have been common for a long time.

On a sports field outside the school, people congregated for a vigil following the most recent killing; others formed a circle and held hands.

The suspect was looked into after the FBI reported the event, but he denied making the threats, according to his father, who also claimed the adolescent did not have access to any weapons in the house.

Notification had also been sent to nearby schools so that the suspect would be under closer observation.

According to Georgia FBI Director Chris Hosey, the gunman used a “AR-style” rifle, and police are looking into how he obtained the weapon within the school.

According to one kid who spoke to AFP, some students first mistook the exercise for a brand-new shooting drill—a drill that is frequently conducted in American schools.

A 17-year-old student named Stephanie Folgar reported hearing “loud bangs” and saw terrified classmates cower in closets and restrooms. “The thought that it might have been you is unsettling,” she remarked.

The secondary school’s administration announced to parents in the morning that it was going into a “strict lockdown following gunshots.”

Long lines of cars could be seen outside the school once it had been secured and parents could go pick up their kids.

“Epidemic of violence”

United States President Joe Biden has denounced this latest tragedy, stating in a statement that the country cannot “accept this as the norm”. The Democrat has been attempting to further restrict access to firearms for years, but has not been successful.

Democratic nominee for vice president, Kamala Harris, declared during a campaign address that “we must end this epidemic of gun violence in our country, once and for all.”

The gunman’s acts were condemned by his opponent, Republican Donald Trump, who referred to him as a “sick and deranged monster.”

One of the crucial states that could determine the outcome of the election in November is Georgia, the state where the incident occurred.

According to data from the American NGO Gun Violence Archive, at least 11,557 individuals have died in 384 mass shootings in the US this year alone (with at least four victims injured or killed).
