Everything we know about Switch 2

Nintendo is reportedly showing third-party developers its Switch 2 console, though it is keeping mum about it. Even though official details are scarce, we have compiled everything we know about the Nintendo Switch 2, which has no name yet, with an update guaranteed.

Nintendo president Furukawa tweeted, “we will make an announcement regarding the successor to the Nintendo Switch during this fiscal year.” Nintendo’s fiscal year ends in March, so the announcement will likely be in late 2024 or early 2025. Developers are sceptical, so Insider Gaming reported that the console may not be released this fiscal year.

Most people expect the console in the second half of 2024. VGC and Eurogamer confirmed this using multiple sources. Accessory and component manufacturers also expect next year. Nintendo will likely take note of our recent issues with Playstation 5 and Xbox Series X and S to avoid repeating them with the console.

At the end of February, Nikkei confirmed through its sources that the Nintendo Switch 2 (or Super Nintendo Switch) would be released in March 2025. Nintendo wants enough consoles and games at launch, so the date was pushed back. This is also confirmed by Vandal.

Cost how much?
The price is still unknown, but initial estimates are around $300/ euros. Because Nintendo has always kept its home console prices consistent, even after inflation. It will likely be affordable, as Nintendo has been with most of its products since the beginning.

What games are included?
We can speculate that ‘Super Mario’, ‘Pokémon’, and ‘Zelda’ have been on almost all of Nintendo’s consoles. As mentioned, third-parties saw an improved version of ‘Breath of the Wild’ for the new console at Gamescom.

Microsoft is the only company to confirm ‘Call of Duty’ in a vague way. ‘Mario + Rabbids – Sparks of Hope’ was delayed by Nintendo, according to UbiSoft.

Were there leaks?
Of course: Although Nintendo has not confirmed or denied the existence of CAD (computer-aided design) images on the internet, many of their features match recent Nintendo patents. Media like VGC accept them after checking their sources. Images have disappeared from Reddit and other forums, but they have appeared on social media and other distribution channels.

The images debuted on a Chinese forum on September 18. The author, a 3D printing expert, reverse engineered the images from two real images. Following the author are Switch accessory manufacturers like Mobapad, which lends legitimacy to the images, but they may not be real. Internet detectives found that the board was made in October 2023, suggesting a non-final prototype.

It has a support tab like the Switch OLED, but a new USB C port on top, a base to place it in the Dock, a second button on the right controller, and no rail system to attach the controllers to the screen. Nintendo patented a magnetic connection.

Will it work backwards?
Most likely, and not just because logic says so. We can’t guarantee that the Switch 2 will have a physical format compatible with Switch cards, but Nintendo’s intention is clear in digital form. Switch’s Nintendo Account allows Wii profiles to be imported, so there’s a start. Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa stated: “We are committed to ensuring a successful transition of Nintendo Switch to the next generation of consoles by taking advantage of Nintendo Accounts.”
