Enriched Editions are the new thing

Unique launches: illustrated book songs, luxury boxes, Christmas publishing.

We discussed the ‘Wings of Blood/Iron’ phenomenon a few months ago. A best-seller was not only selling on its own, but bookstores were in chaos and Wallapop was flooded with speculation. Special editions of the novel sold out in minutes, raising expectations.

Empyrean go full throttle. The six-book ‘Empyrean’ saga begins with ‘Wings of Blood’ and ‘Wings of Iron’. Amazon is adapting it into a series, it had five million readers, and it spent 41 weeks on ‘The New York Times’ best-seller list. In Spain, it exceeded Planeta’s expectations, so it released a Collector’s Edition with colored “taco” edges and series motifs.

They take it from me. The first saga had a print run of 75,000, with 30,000 with the tinted pad. Unlike the previous edition, the special edition of ‘Iron Wings’ did not increase in price.

Massive requests for the special edition led to social media speculation and protests. As we reported, sales were three times the publisher’s expectations, and large stores hoarded copies, which inconvenienced booksellers and readers.

Regular reprints. The world of highly sought-after literary sagas and franchises, as ‘Game of Thrones‘ fans know, can be a game of endurance for patient readers. Publishers must find ways to sell the same product repeatedly, so they create new editions each year that are more special.

The Collector’s and Enriched Edition of ‘Empyrean’ is the same book with new back decoration and an unpublished introductory text. Does it add much to previous observations? No. Fans may buy the book again. Without doubt.

Not just Christmas. Special editions are not limited to fantasy or Christmas. Spanish publishers saw the potential of this type of edition, which can be found in dozens per house, in the summer. Penguin and Planeta, two of the largest publishing companies in the country, have many special editions with colored covers, including sagas and hits like ‘Sins’, ‘Shadowhunters’, ‘A Court of Mist and Fury’, ‘Elantris’, and ‘Red Queen’, as well as classics and hits from the past like ‘Pride and Prejudice’, ‘Normal People’, ‘The Infinity in a Reed’, or the inevitable reissues of authors like Tolkien and Martin

A box set phenomenon. The box set is the pinnacle of this phenomenon, allowing books to be republished without changes.

The box set that collects the entire ‘Blackwater’ saga, one of the year’s biggest publishing successes, puts back on the Christmas shelf a series of books that have already completed their bookstore life cycle. Penguin has several Harry Potter boxes decorated in the style of each house. Another way to revive a cancelled series that makes huge profits.
