Debby becomes a Category 1 Hurricane

(Tampa) The U.S. Weather Service reports that Tropical Storm Debbie intensified into a Category 1 hurricane as it moved closer to Florida on Sunday night.

After Tropical Storm Chris, Hurricane Beryl, and Tropical Storm Alberto—all of which formed in June—Debby is the fourth named storm of the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season.

Forecasters issued a warning that Georgia, South Carolina, and Florida would experience catastrophic flooding due to Debby’s strong rains.

Debby is predicted to land near the Florida Big Bend region on Monday at noon, according to the National Hurricane Center in Miami. Up until six a.m. on Monday, there was also a tornado watch in force for a portion of Georgia and Florida.

Beginning on Tuesday, Debby was predicted to proceed east across northern Florida before coming to a stop over coastal Georgia and South Carolina. As Debby’s outer bands passed over Florida’s west coast, streets flooded and power disruptions occurred. Majority of the roadways on Siesta Key, a barrier island outside Sarasota, were under water, according to Sarasota County officials. The system was expected to intensify as it curved off the very warm southwest coast of Florida, according to the hurricane center.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis issued a warning during a briefing on Sunday afternoon, stating that the storm would result in “really, really significant flooding that would occur in north central Florida.”

Hurricane Idalia’s route would be similar to that of the storm, he claimed, but it would be “much wetter.” “We’re going to see a lot more flooding,” he stated.

Tropical storm warnings were issued for Florida’s west coast, the southern Florida Keys, and the Dry Tortugas Islands, while hurricane warnings were issued for portions of the Big Bend region and the Florida Panhandle. A tropical storm watch was in effect for the Panhandle and further west.

Hurricanes and tropical storms have the power to overrun canals and drainage systems, causing river floods. Rainfall is expected to range from 6 to 12 inches, with isolated places in Florida expecting up to 18 inches.

Storm surge is predicted to affect Tampa Bay and the Gulf Coast.

Even on bright days, flooding can occur in Florida. The storm is predicted to cause storm surges of two to four feet (0.6 to 1.2 meters) across a large portion of the Gulf Coast, including Tampa Bay, and up to seven feet (2.1 meters) north of that in the sparsely populated Big Bend region.

A “life-threatening storm surge flooding danger” was mentioned by forecasters in the vicinity of Hernando Beach, Crystal River, Steinhatchee, and Cedar Key. While officials in Hernando, Manatee, Pasco, and Taylor counties called for voluntary evacuations, those in Citrus and Levy counties mandated the evacuation of coastal communities. Both in those counties and others, shelters were opened.

In 61 of Florida’s 67 counties, Mr. DeSantis has issued proclamations of emergency, and 3,000 troops of the National Guard have been activated. Governors Henry McMaster of South Carolina and Brian Kemp of Georgia have each declared states of emergency.

Authorities in New York and New England were keeping an eye on the storm’s trajectory in case any remnants made it to their states. Following weeks of intense rain and thunderstorms, several states, including Vermont and New York, are still dealing with floods and soggy ground.
