The day the prize was announced, Penguin Random House announced it had acquired five of the Norwegian author’s works.

The Swedish Academy awarded Norwegian author Jon Fosse the 2023 Nobel Prize in Literature on October 5. The academy praised his “innovative plays and prose which give voice to the unsayable”.

“I am overwhelmed and grateful. I see this as an award to literature that first and foremost aims to be literature, without other considerations,” the author said in a statement released by his publishing house after the Nobel Prize committee announced his name.

A contemporary theatre master
Jon Fosse, a leading European writer, was born in 1959 in Haugesund, Norway. Le Monde called him “the Beckett of the 21st century” and The Globe and Mail called him “one of the most provocative pens in contemporary theater”.

In 1983, Fosse published Red, Black, his first novel. His works include novels, stories, poetry, essay collections, and children’s books. After publishing his first play, And We’ll Never Be Parted, in 1994, the prolific author wrote 40 plays.

The 1999 Claude Regy production of Someone Is Going to Come was his international breakthrough as a playwright. In the play, a man and a woman move to a run-down house in the middle of nowhere to be alone but become paranoid that “someone is going to come”, causing hidden jealousies.

The Booker Prizes website reports that his plays have been performed over 1,000 times in 50 languages.

Fellow In My Struggle, former student Karl Ove Knausgaard describes how Fosse’s work influenced him. France made Fosse a Chevalier of the Ordre national du Merite in 2003.

A one-sentence masterpiece
From 2019 to 2021, Fosse published his “Septology” in three volumes: The Other Name, I Is Another, and A New Name. A single-sentence monologue by an elderly artist to himself offers a bleak but ecstatic reflection on art and God in the 1,250-page prose work.

Although Fosse told The New Yorker that the aging artist’s reckoning with religion is “not autobiographical at all”, the Norwegian author had his own religious awakening a decade earlier. He joined the Catholic Church and received alcoholism treatment in 2012 after being an atheist until then.

Fosse lives in Austria, Oslo, and western Norway.

Fosse has translated several novels, including Franz Kafka’s The Trial, one of his favorites.

Nobel Literature Prize
The Nobel Prize is worth 11 million Swedish crowns ($990,000 or €948,000).

The Swedish Academy, which chooses literature laureates, includes authors, historians, philosophers, and linguists. In 2018, a #MeToo scandal rocked the academy, which has been criticized for overrepresenting Western white male authors.

French author Annie Ernaux won last year, praised by the Swedish Academy for her “courage and critical acuity”. The academy honored British Tanzanian writer Abdulrazak Gurnah in 2021 for his work on exile, colonialism, and racism.
