Chris Evans returns to Marvel, completing the circle that will make ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ predictable.

After Robert Downey Jr.’s return as Doctor Doom, the Fantastic Four’s nemesis who may or may not be related to Tony Stark, Chris Evans returns as another Avengers legend. He was singing: Marvel comics have resurrected dead characters for decades.

Or no? What role Evans will play in his Avengers return is unknown. According to The Hollywood Reporter, it will appear in the next Avengers film, ‘Doomsday’, directed by the Russo brothers (another unsurprising return) and scheduled for release on May 1, 2026. Evans briefly returned to the MCU in ‘Deadpool and Wolverine’ as the Human Torch, reprising his role from the pre-Disney Fantastic Four films.

Some options. Since Jonathan Majors left Marvel, the multiverses no longer drive the company, but they still exist. It is the easiest way to revive deceased characters and their actors. Why not bring one of the multiverse’s Captain Americas if we find Blade or X-23 in ‘Deadpool and Wolverine’? One who broke Hitler’s jaw in World War II or one who survived a Thanos confrontation.

Always open. Evans always said he would return if possible. He told GQ in 2023 “It was a great experience, so never say never. I also value it highly. Definitely proud of it. I sometimes can’t believe it happened. I wouldn’t want someone to give me a black eye if it felt like a quick money grab, didn’t meet expectations, or wasn’t connected to its original essence.”

The endless tale. This signing confirms that Disney will not risk anything with the new Avengers films. Marvel has decided to return to its core values after the failures of ‘Endgame‘ and ‘Secret Wars’, which failed to engage audiences and resulted in poor box office performance.

Essential months. The MCU will return in 2025 with ‘Thunderbolts’ or the Fantastic Four after a hiatus in 2024 (‘Deadpool and Wolverine’ is a rarity… and one of the year’s highest-grossing films). A new chance to create more MCU characters and actors who won’t be stuck in this strange and toxic dynamic that keeps them attached to their roles: Evans’ career has been lackluster since ‘Endgame’, partly because the public wants to remember his most popular role.

Evans returned to Marvel for a cameo in “Deadpool & Wolverine.” Instead of Steve Rogers, he played Johnny Storm, The Human Torch, from the Fantastic Four movies.

Though Evans’ role in the May 1 Doomsday film is unknown, Downey Jr. won’t say “I am Iron Man.” The Fantastic Four’s main villain, Doctor Victor von Doom, will be played by Pedro Pascal, Joseph Quinn, Vanessa Kirby, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach, rather than him.

“I’ll never say never, just because it was such a wonderful experience,” he told GQ last September, “but I’m also very precious with it. It makes me proud. I sometimes can’t believe it happened.”

His return would have to be epic given how much the stars and fans love this franchise.

“I wouldn’t want the black eye if it felt like a cash grab or didn’t live up to expectations,” he said, “or if it wasn’t connected to that original thing.”

He ended his Captain America tenure with the most touching message.

Avengers 4 officially ended. In 2018, he wrote on X, formerly Twitter, about his last day of filming: “It was an emotional day.” “Playing this role for 8 years has been a privilege. Many thanks to everyone in front of, behind, and in the audience for the memories! Eternally grateful.”
