A thrilling and delirious plot device that revives ‘The Visit’ director.

For years, we’ve known that M. Night Shyamalan was a true thriller reformer who turned the genre upside down and rebuilt it with concise, direct, and devastating films. The failures of ‘Airbender, the last warrior’ and ‘After Earth’ allowed the director to focus on specific projects after ‘The visit’.

In recent years, Shyamalan has developed devices with a powerful core idea and a size and budget he can control down to the last shot. Only in this way do films like ‘The Trap’ work, which Max discovers a few months after its release: it’s perhaps his best film since ‘The Visit’ and exemplifies the best Shyamalan.

Again, we have that powerful idea that makes the film run smoothly throughout its length (a serial killer is caught by the police in a stadium where a massive concert is being held, to which he has gone with his daughter), and also a controversial twist in the final third that will divide viewers. That controversy is part of the fun: we can’t decide if we like the film’s crazy ending decisions. We admire the director’s bravery and how easy it is to ride this insane roller coaster.

Excellent performances from the entire cast, but especially Josh Harnett, who uses his unique magnetism as a half-American, half-trickster who hides secrets. A poisoned Halloween candy full of the house’s trademark twists and surprises, ‘The Trap’ is one of the Indian director’s most accessible and magnetic films. If you can’t let go, choose a roller coaster with fewer altitude changes.

Caddo Lake, Max’s new mystery thriller from Topside directors Logan George and Celine Held, is M. Night Shyamalan’s latest project after Trap’s success. The film was produced by Shyamalan’s company. The film, starring Eliza Scanlen (Little Women, Sharp Objects) and Dylan O’Brien (Teen Wolf, Saturday Night), follows Karnack, Texas, residents after an 8-year-old girl disappears and strange things happen on the lake. The trailer suggests a sci-fi plot in this time-twisting, confusing film. The better question is whether the nonchronological turn of events meets Shyamalan standards. I explain the twist and determine if Caddo Lake is worth watching for Shyamalan fans. Prepare for spoilers!

To answer that, I must explain everyone’s relationship. Caddo Lake following two protagonists: First is 2022’s Ellie (Scanlen), a late-teenage girl. Ellie and her redheaded mother, Celeste, have a strained relationship. Why I’m mentioning hair color will be obvious. Celeste married Daniel Bennett (Eric Lange), who has an 8-year-old daughter, Anna, from a previous relationship, after Ellie’s father disappeared when she was a baby. Anna and Ellie are close. Ellie storms off after fighting with Celeste, causing the drama. The next morning, Anna is missing and Ellie is notified. Anna likely followed upset Ellie (as she has before) but got lost, hurt, or harmed by someone else.

Paris Lang (O’Brien), Caddo Lake’s second star, is a young man grieving his mother’s death. Paris’ mother’s seizure while driving sent her car, with her and Paris inside, over a barrier into the lake below. Paris lost his redheaded girlfriend, who moved to Houston before the film, due to his inability to cope healthily. The girlfriend returns to town, where she and a healthier Paris briefly reunite. After experiencing strange sensations while working on the lake, Paris becomes obsessed with finding the truth about his mother’s death, which he believes was a medical misdiagnosis.

Caddo Lake takes place in Karnack, Texas, and the real Caddo Lake, so dinghies and skiffs are the main mode of transportation—fittingly, the movie feels like a creepy swamp.

Classic creepy lake, missing girl. Additionally, two copper-haired women of different ages? I sense time manipulation.

You’re right! Paris and Ellie find a lake spot that transports you through time. Paris finds it while investigating his mother’s grave, and Ellie finds it while looking for Anna. Anna must have accidentally traveled through time to follow Ellie.She is Ellie’s grandmother. After the reveal, Ellie investigated at an internet café in 2005 and found that Anna grew up and lived a happy, healthy life, with records starting in 1952. Naturally, she will have Paris later in life. How about another twist? I think Anna being Paris’ mother is more surprising than Paris being Ellie’s father.
