Tim Walz criticizes Trump as barely named running mate

Walz informed the audience that his students motivated him to enter politics. I was encouraged to run for office. Walz said they recognized in me what I wanted to teach in them: a devotion to the common good and a hope that one person can change the world. Walz contrasted his efforts on the Veterans Affairs committee and for rural communities with Trump’s and the Republican Party’s agenda.

“Older generations recall the Republican party as the party of freedom,” Walz stated. “They meant the government should be able to invade your doctor’s office. Minnesotans respect their neighbors’ personal decisions, even if we wouldn’t. The golden guideline is: mind your own dang business.”

He also attacked Trump and Vance, as he had in the weeks leading up to Harris choosing him as her running partner on Tuesday. “These guys are creepy and, yes, just weird as hell,” he said to much applause. “You see that. You see that.”

Walz joked about a couch-sex rumor involving Vance. “I can’t wait to debate the guy,” he remarked after waiting several seconds for the applause to stop. “If he gets off the couch and shows up.”

Harris’s running buddy pick was well-received by the audience. The vice president had a historically short time to decide after becoming the party’s nominee to challenge Trump after Joe Biden left last month. Walz beat Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro, who was present Tuesday. As if to avoid any allegations of hard feelings, Shapiro took several beats to soak up the tremendous applause before saying, “I love you Philadelphia — and you know what else I love?” I enjoy governing you.”

Walz’s near-universal praise from Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Joe Manchin contrasted with the Republican party’s reaction of J.D. Vance a few weeks earlier. When Trump requested Vance to join the ticket, his favorability was -5 percent. As more Americans have gotten to know him, his favorability has dropped to -14 percent, making him the least-liked vice presidential pick ever. (It’s not surprising given Vance’s three biggest media moments: that couch rumor, his 2021 attack on “childless cat ladies,” and a charming anecdote in which he told his son to “shut the hell up” while talking to Trump.)

Vance appeared in Philadelphia with a modest crowd before the Temple University lovefest. The Trump campaign’s idea to send Vance to every city Harris and Walz will visit this week was questionable. Vance had trouble filling a venue a tenth of the size of the Democratic ticket’s arena in Philadelphia. Vance spoke in front of a banner that read “Kamala Chaos,” but it was too low, so seated event attendees blacked out “Chaos” and thought Vance was at a Harris event
