A stunning stairway for the Sagrada Familia.

For many years, they have been searching for a solution to the problem of the Sagrada Familia’s stairway, which is impossible to climb.
The expropriation of residents appears to be a fact; however, we need to determine the number of people that it impacts.

Having the opportunity to reside just across from the main door of a landmark like the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona must be considered a luxury. Not only because you will have the opportunity to take pleasure in seeing one of the most significant architectural masterpieces of our time, but also because the worth of that apartment is incalculable. One of the issues is that if you live there, you run the risk of becoming homeless at some point in the future.

What is the reason? A staircase that is both beautiful and showy, serving as the entrance to the basilica, will serve as the crowning achievement of the Sagrada Familia and the completion of Gaudí’s work in the field of pharaonic architecture. And the residences that are located in close proximity are a simple obstruction.

Putting up a Gloria front. During the year 1882, construction on the Temple Expiatori of the Sagrada Familia got underway. The work in question is that of Gaudí, who, like a great number of architects and cathedral designers, passed away before witnessing the completion of his work. It is the church in Europe that receives the most visitors, second only to St. Peter’s that is located in the Vatican, but it still has a long way to go.

Gaudí devoted the final eleven years of his life to the creation of his masterwork, which is considered to be the epitome of Catalan modernist architecture. The Gloria front, which is the most enormous and ornate of the entire basilica, was the focal point of his efforts. The reason for this is that it is the primary entrance to the temple, and Gaudí desired for the act of approaching the porticoes to be an experience of great significance.

It is the staircase. Additionally, in order to access the Portico of Glory, the architect conceived of a massive stairway that will symbolize a journey from the depths of Hell to the realm of salvation, provided that one has made amends for them. Indeed, in a literal sense, since it will start out as a tunnel, and the concept behind it is that it will have many depictions of evil, as well as purgatory and other visions that will demonstrate how we can reach redemption and glory by our labor.

However, the difficulty is that when Gaudí created all of this, there was nothing around the church. Although it sounds wonderful, this is only a problem. There are two squares positioned to the east and west of the cathedral, however there are two blocks of buildings built directly in the area where the grand staircase will be situated. Additionally, the plan is to construct the staircase in its entirety.

There is a nuisance caused by these buildings. Based on the architect’s first blueprints, the Sagrada Familia was supposed to be situated in the middle of a star-like structure. Access to it could be gained from a number of different points, and the concept was that it would be completely viewable from any vantage point. At this point in time, that is not feasible. That is to say, if you are directly below it, you will be able to see the entire thing. However, there are structures in the vicinity of the portico and the altar. Only a portion of the main facade of the temple is visible to us through the small passageway that leads to the Font.

The City Council of Barcelona has been aware for a considerable amount of time that this is a problem that will require attention at some point in the future, and in fact, it has placed a notice on the table. In it, they made a commitment to investigate the essential solutions for the completion of the project as well as the modification of both the General Metropolitan Plan and the Special Comprehensive Urban Development Plan. Nevertheless, they also indicated that in order to construct the staircase, the “expropriation of a large number of homes and premises” would be carried out, which would necessitate the guaranteeing of the right to housing.

It was the Metropolitan Plan of 1976. The fact that there are no agreements is precisely the source of the problem. As part of the 1976 Public General Meeting, the city set aside a two-block promenade in order to facilitate the construction of an avenue from Diagonal, which would eventually be the location of Gaudí’s grand stairway. It was similar to reserve the land in order to be able to construct the stairs without disturbing anyone, but the difficulty is that all of the space has been urbanized, and there are now buildings of apartments and shops.

Hold on… how is it? In 1975, a few months prior to the 1976 General Assembly, the businessman Josep Lluís Núñez, who was also the former president of FC Barcelona, may have recognized the potential for business and initiated construction in the region. With the knowledge that their residences will be razed at some point in the future, did the locals purchase their properties at lesser prices? It is an implication that has been brought up on occasion; nevertheless, according to statements made to the Diari de Barcelona, the locals were not aware of this.

One of the residents has stated that the urban legend that these apartments were sold at a reduced price is not true. In addition to this, they indicated that the sum of money was extremely substantial and that they were unaware of any potential expropriation schemes in the future. Gabriel Mercadal, the head of the Sagrada Familia Residents’ Association, made the observation that after a few meetings, everything had come to a halt.

A portal leading to Hell for the people who live there. Both the citizens who have been impacted and the construction organization of the Sagrada Familia, known as Junta Constructora, have been presented with a variety of potential solutions by the city over the course of the years. In the beginning, the staircase would require a width of sixty meters in order to be constructed. This would effectively result in the demolition of the two blocks that are located between Mallorca and Calle Aragón. The figure was lowered to 40 meters wide and did not reach Calle Aragón in a later design. This would make it possible to avoid demolishing the side buildings. It was projected that the number of removals would only be about 200, as opposed to the 1,020 that would take place if the 1976 PGM was followed.

In a different suggestion, it appears that the establishment of an underground parking lot for buses has been agreed upon. This would be a solution to one of the issues that people have been complaining about.
