United States: the crucial unity call

It is only appropriate to denounce the murder attempt on Donald Trump in a society racked by conservative gun fetishism. This incident raises awareness of another, equally dangerous weapon: words.

On Saturday, July 13, the United States of America almost reconnected with its worst demons. According to preliminary investigations, a 20-year-old guy with no criminal history would have shot and killed Republican nominee for president on November 5, Donald Trump, just a few millimeters away. In addition, the latter killed a Republican supporter and gravely injured two more people who had come to a campaign rally near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, a state that is critical to the election, before being shot by police.

This attack can only be condemned, even though it just missed its target. It will, however, come as a surprise only to those who cannot understand where division carried to the brink of irreversibility leads—to a state of civil conflict where the enemy is seen as an ally and the critic as a traitor. Opinion poll after opinion poll has demonstrated how political violence is becoming more and more acceptable in the US in recent years.

If the ballot in the ballot box does not stop the opposite camp—which can only be that of evil—then everything becomes acceptable for a minority that is poised to fire the trigger. The fact that this shift is occurring in a nation plagued by conservative gun fetishism is an aggravating factor. The outcome of a lethal cultural conflict, this irrational fixation gives the first person who demonstrates signs of life access to a semi-automatic rifle.

Regretfully, there is nothing to anticipate in this regard. Even with unquestionable majorities in favor of a sensible framework governing gun availability, the current quo is guaranteed by Republican obstinacy, bolstered by the guilty leniency of a conservative-majority Supreme Court.

Nonetheless, in light of the pain Pennsylvania nearly escaped, it is imperative to be cognizant of another, equally dangerous weapon: the words that are carelessly waved on platforms, TVs, and social media. The irony is that, on this issue, the person who has withstood the most severe political assault in recent memory has frequently done little to return his nation to reason. On the opposite.

Donald Trump had let things to go out of hand when he contested the 2020 presidential election results to the point of ridiculousness. This led to his supporters trying and failing to storm the Capitol in Washington, D.C., on January 6, 2021. Vice President Mike Pence objected to their actions in the name of the US Constitution, and they had threatened to hang him there.

Republicans immediately countered that Democrats are arming the gunman in Pennsylvania by depicting the former businessman as a threat to democracy. However, Democrats can counter that the former president’s campaign is fueled by political vengeance and incendiary rhetoric about purge promises.

We can only hope that the uncommon appeal for togetherness in the country, made by Joe Biden and Donald Trump following the tragedy, will spread. The United States of America is handing the upper hand to its foes and depressing its allies by succumbing to the poison of fratricidal divides.
