Many associate Christmas with “ugly” reindeer sweaters or snowman neckties. Especially on the big screen: Bad fashion thrives during the holidays, from Nora Krank’s garish, mistletoe-embroidered vest in “Christmas with the Kranks” to Mark Darcy’s Rudolph turtleneck in “Bridget Jones’ Diary.” Paper crowns, Santa hats, and clashing colours are common.

One holiday classic shows how it can be different: Rita Ryack’s Oscar-nominated costume design for the 2000 live-action adaptation of Dr. Seuss’ “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” showed that Christmas can be chic and that bundling up needn’t be boring. The maximalist take on the humble Seussian origin story, which follows the redemption of the irascible green anti-hero (Jim Carrey) who stole Christmas from the Whos of Whoville, was a big change from what was available elsewhere.

Taylor Momsen played Cindy Lou Who in the stylish film, wearing puff-sleeved, peter-pan collared dresses, coats, and pyjamas.

Molly Shannon’s plaid corset frock and surrealist teacup fascinator as Betty Lou Who were also memorable. The couture cup-and-saucer look “made the fashion world,” said Ryack. She remembers seeing teacup-hatted mannequins at a Versace boutique in Las Vegas after the film’s release. “That was pretty flattering.”

Most notable were Christine Baranski’s theatrical costumes as Martha May Whovier, the Grinch’s lustful love interest, which have recently found a new audience online.

Gen Z ‘Grinch’ fashionistas have created YouTube tutorials on how to make Martha May costumes, and several Etsy sellers sell made-to-order replicas. Screenshots of Baranski on set in a powder blue and white ostrich feather-trimmed Hollywood-style robe appear every December on social media. “The fashion icon of Whoville,” One X fan wrote. “No one did it like her.”

Ryack is surprised by the renewed interest. “I found out yesterday that Martha May is iconic,” she said from her Los Angeles home by phone. “It’s crazy.”

The 1957 children’s book and 1966 animated television special kept the Whos’ fashion simple — nightdresses, leggings, jackets, and bow-ties in a streamlined palette and Seussian flourishes — but Ryack was encouraged to be fantastical in the live-action adaptation.

“I had grown up with Dr. Seuss, his style was so energetic and upbeat—and animated,” said Ryack. “The challenge was capturing his drawings in 3D.”

Texture—tufts, fleece, pom-poms, bouclé, corduroy, crochet, chenille, chemise, and chartreuse—was her solution “We made many mohair and fuzzy sweaters,” she said. “We tried to make intarsia sweaters from book shapes.” Ryack’s costumes started with padded bodysuits that sculpted almost every Who in Whoville into a pear shape.

Except Martha May, whose silhouettes were 1950s in style. “Because (the film) was about family,” she said. As I grew up, I became attached to visual things.

The film’s London premiere brought back memories of Queen Elizabeth II’s coronation, though she may not have known it inspired fashion. “When I was a tiny little girl I was so excited about the gowns and Princess Margaret,” Ryack said.The corset-like tops, tight bodice, and flowing skirt were my favourites. They were feminine and lovely.”
