HBO is betting big on 'Game of Thrones'

Max gave us an exclusive London preview of his 2025 international franchise and series plan.

Harry Potter’s news was the most notable of the day, but not the only scoop. In London to see HBO CEO Casey Bloys present the platform’s new features for 2025 (and its equivalent outside the U.S., Max), we sampled many other highly appealing titles that we will see in the coming months.

Bloys presented on the excellent fiction being produced outside the US while in Europe for the first time. The platform has only just arrived in France, and the UK won’t arrive until 2026, but production continues, and we’ve seen the first images of several Spanish and other European series. Highlights of the day are summarized.

HBO’s Latin America content manager Mariano César presented Scars of Beauty, HBO’s first telenovela. He said this new series would combine romance, ambition, and betrayal with modern themes like image obsession.

Not on Purpose: Chespirito’s Story: A surprising highlight of the night was the biopic of Mexican actor Chespirito, who created iconic roles like El Chavo del Ocho and Chapulín Colorado, in a series produced by his son. HBO’s faithful recreation of Chespirito’s creations is great, and we hope Spain keeps the original title: ‘Fue sin querer queriendo’.

Like Water for Chocolate: Salma Hayek appeared on the scene to announce that the wonderful series based on Laura Esquivel’s novel had been renewed for a second season and that we would not have any more. The story will end in this second year of local gastronomy and magical realism.
The Eastern Gate: A Polish thriller about international spy agencies clashing during unusual international tension.

After its first minutes were shown in San Sebastian, Enrique Urbizu’s long-awaited HBO series premiered its first trailer. The series holds its own against its international competitors. Two women, including Maribel Verdú, investigate a crime committed in Seville during Holy Week.

The Spanish production ‘Furia’ by Félix Sabroso will depict five mature women: Candela Peña, Carmen Machi, Nathalie Poza, Pilar Castro, and Cecilia Roth, with five interconnected stories.
A big bet for HBO this year is The Seduction. Featuring the mature Madame de Rosemonde from the libertine play, it serves as a prequel to ‘Dangerous Liaisons’. The trailer promised a lavish, HBO-style period drama with a modern twist. Diane Kruger stars.

‘The White Lotus’ third season is long-awaited. The new trailer and Thailand setting promise a new twist for the series. It premieres in February, and Bloys promised unexpected twists for the next season, which is already in production.

HBO’s highly anticipated 2025 release The Last of Us seems to be underwhelmed by the first season’s massive success. The first trailer faithfully recreated key moments from the second video game, in a series that will repeat drama, monsters, and apocalypse.

‘Mare of Easttown’ creator Brad Ingelsby’s new thriller stars Mark Ruffalo and Tom Pelphrey. It follows an agent investigating drug den robberies. But the robberies have more complicated motives.

Welcome to Derry: Like Task, this prequel to the two successful Stephen King adaptations will arrive in the fall. Pennywise’s origins are explored in this 1962 film with some racial commentary. Andy Muschietti’s films have terrifying imagery, and the series does too.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: HBO’s policy of not letting us wait a year for a ‘Game of Thrones’ series is working: in 2025, we’ll see the premiere of this production, which, with each new trailer, like the one we saw exclusively in London, shows that George RR Martin’s universe can accommodate different tones, settings, and This turn may lead fans to picaresque, mundane comedy, and ground-level adventures.
