No matter your opinion of Disney or Moana, this new release is sure to be a Christmas hit and one of the year’s highest-grossing films. It follows a strange and unexpected plot, but Disney trusts it because its previous film was one of the most watched.
Sky-high predictions. ‘Moana 2’ grossed $57.5 million in the US on Wednesday, just before Thanksgiving, ensuring a huge box office weekend, surpassing ‘Wicked’. The first five days are expected to break the Thanksgiving opening record of 125 million for ‘Frozen 2’ with 175 million.
Vaiana’s ups and downs. Oddly, ‘Vaiana 2’ was a secondary product in December 2020 when Disney was suffering from the coronavirus and sending high-quality premieres to Disney+. In that context, it announced a streaming series based on ‘Vaiana’. After years of development, Disney announced in February 2024 that it would release the series as a theatrical film. One reason for this change is the first ‘Vaiana’s’ huge box office. Second, Disney+ no longer prioritizes exclusive content. But more.
The most streaming. Aside from its box office success, ‘Moana’ is not a Disney classic: its protagonist is not a “princess” and there are other hits in the highest-grossing house. Children repeat. Children watch movies three, five, ten, or hundred times, which explains their domestic and streaming successes. Any parent knows that kids can’t stop watching movies. They never tire of repeating films, so the top ten streaming films between 2020 and 2024 are all animated. All Disney except ‘Super Mario Bros. – The Movie’, which is another topic. Because children never end, repeats endlessly.
Musical’s allure. The fact that most of these films are musicals is another benefit. They can be watched again and again because the songs make them fun, and for children, the music and dance make them interactive. Winks and double-entendre jokes give ‘Moana’ a “adult” feel. The only other pre-2020 movie in the top 10 was Disney’s Frozen, which grossed more than Moana. Moana was fourth in 2022, second in 2021 and 2020, and Disney+ launched five years ago. These rough but undeniable metrics suggest that Moana, which in 2016 was outgrossed by Zootopia and Sing, is the most-watched family film of the 2020s. Frozen still hypnotizes younger audiences; any Halloween in the past decade has seen children dressed as Elsas and Annas. Beyond Frozen’s innovation of having two singing princesses, one with superpowers, Disney animated movies have always had great staying power, especially when they sing catchy songs.
Moana boasts a princess (Auliʻi Cravalho), a great song score (with Lin-Manuel Miranda), and a relatable story about the chief’s daughter (Auliʻi Cravalho) seeking adventure and finding it when she seeks out demigod Maui (Dwayne Johnson) to save her island. Even with The Rock in his best and most fitting role, Moana has managed to outstream blockbusters like Frozen and newer, beloved titles like Encanto.
