This amazing science fiction series has a 100% Rotten Tomatoes rating. Its unique aesthetics and plot set it apart from most genre productions on the platform. ‘Better than Us’ is Russian, originally produced for the state channel C1R, but Netflix acquired it for international distribution and to add to its originals lineup.

In 2029, androids are full-fledged citizens in the series. Mistaken for humans, they work as personal assistants, security guards, and office workers. Arisa, chosen as the perfect companion, is being hunted for killing a man who wanted to abuse her.

After settling in with a human family, the android develops self-awareness, emotions, and learning. At the same time, the androids rebel against the humans and commit a series of measured murders, with CRONOS, the robot manufacturer, involved in several subplots.

Using family drama and corporate thriller elements, ‘Better than Us’ draws on classic stories of artificial intelligence rebellion like ‘I, Robot’ but plays it cruder and more melodramatic. It has a unique vision of the future (some elements are clearly very advanced, while others seem to have barely evolved) and a vision of robotics that is both retro and visionary, as shown by the androids‘ unusual aesthetic (based on Russian dolls from decades ago).

The best thing about science fiction is that every interpretation is different. The genre’s broad appeal comes from that: Numerous sci-fi genres have been created, including dramas, thrillers, horror, animated, and space sci-fi. The best sci-fi stories make you feel like you’re on another planet.

The eight-episode British series, based on Si Spencer’s graphic novel of the same name, mixes sci-fi with the genre by following four detectives in four different time periods who investigate the same murder. The detectives—Jacob Fortune-Lloyd, Amaka Okafor, Kyle Soller, and Shira Haas—unknowingly find the same naked corpse of a man in the same place between 1890 and 2053, linking them as they investigate. Bodies is a murder mystery, but time travel adds just enough sci-fi weirdness to make it more appealing.

Stranger Things suits sci-fi fans, novices, and everyone in between. A group of small-town Indiana kids’ lives are changed forever when their friend disappears in Matt and Ross Duffer’s series, evoking the ’80s coming-of-age feeling. Supernatural beings, alternate dimensions, and government conspiracies are found. It starts that way, weaving a vast web of horror, science fiction, and teen drama as the stakes rise each season. Coming for the supernatural, staying for the show’s charming young characters’ relationships.
