Risto Mejide premieres 'Demos. The Big Survey'

The Catalan publicist tells ‘Infobae Spain’ how this new TV project was created, showing viewers his new side.

Demos is led by Risto Mejide. Mediaset’s new professional project, El gran sondeo, premieres on Telecinco in prime time on Wednesday, October 23. This platform allows street people to voice their concerns and address current societal issues.

The publicist told a press conference attended by several media outlets, including Infobae Spain, that it was inspired by the Catalan’s Viajando con Chester program a year earlier. “In Viajando con Chester many people told me ‘I loved the interview with such person, but it would be great if you brought more anonymous people’,” he says of the Cuatro program’s in-depth interviews.

Risto Mejide said he started dreaming up Demos then. The Big Poll, a hemicycle-like set where the public can vote live. The voting issue seems utopian. I will ask your opinion, make you vote, make you get wet, and tell you what Spain thinks,” says the TV host, describing the show’s dynamics.

Each program will feature 300 anonymous people aged 20, 30, 40, 50, and over 60 in stands. Their role is to share opinions and testimonies on various topics to understand the true feelings of the Spanish population. “300 people represent Spain on a specific topic, not Spain itself. I find that healthy. Elevating street issues to television programs. That program sounds great.”

“My career is at its peak. I’ve improved as a speaker. When I started this business, I couldn’t present. I only judged talent shows, and Todo es mentira and Viajando con Chester were fire tests for me, he says, adding that “as a talent show judge, his days are numbered.” “I am tired of judging, so I would rather invest my role in these ideas that involve listening.”

After discussing his professional development, he discussed Demos’ main feature, the big survey. “Life lacks active listening. After 18 years, I can handle this format. I like listening and want to make that my career, which is my biggest challenge. It has been a long time since we listened to the street,” Risto Mejide says, suggesting that citizens’ real concerns are ignored. “Great training sessions, like Jesús Vázquez’s (Hablando se entiende la vasca), have received attention, but have not been held in a while.

Risto Mejide cites La Revuelta de David Broncano’s success. “The program begins with listening. That need exists. For years, television baited things that never happened, so viewers stopped believing. Now you realize that the program’s content is more important than selling bait.”
