After a trial that was unprecedented in the history of American justice, a federal jury in New York on Friday found former Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernandez guilty of international drug trafficking.
Hernandez now faces the possibility of spending the rest of his life behind bars.
Additionally, Mr. Hernandez was found guilty of conspiracy to commit drug trafficking and trafficking weapons, as well as possession of weapons, during his eight-year presidency between 2014 and 2022. According to federal prosecutors, Mr. Hernandez was responsible for the creation of a narco-state throughout his presidency.
The courts will make the pronouncement of the sentence at a later time.
As stated by the prosecution, “JOH” was the recipient of bribes amounting to millions of dollars from various drug cartels. One of these cartels was the Sinaloa cartel, which was led by the notorious Mexican drug trafficker Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, who was sentenced to life in prison by the American courts in 2019 and is currently being held in a high security prison.
It is believed that these bribes were paid in exchange for keeping drug traffickers from being extradited and ensuring the transportationbia of drugs from Colom to the American market with the assistance of the military, the police, and the legal system.
The prosecution claims that while his president, Honduras became a “highway” for the transportation of cocaine from Colombia. They assert that the network that Mr. Hernandez supported was responsible for the illegal importation of more than 500 tons of cocaine into the United States between the years 2004 and 2022.
NEW YORK (Associated Press) — Juan Orlando Hernandez, a former president of Honduras, was found guilty on Friday in New York of charges that he colluded with drug traffickers and utilized his military and national police force to facilitate the unfettered entry of tons of cocaine into the United States. Hernandez was convicted of these crimes.
Hernandez, who held the position of president of Honduras from 2014 until 2022, was accused by the United States authorities with drug trafficking and firearms offenses. These charges linked Hernandez to the illicit importation of tons of cocaine into the United States over the course of the previous two decades. In order to pad his personal pockets, finance his political campaigns, and commit electoral fraud in order to win two presidential elections, the prosecution claims that he accepted payments from El Chapo’s Sinaloa cartel as well as other drug networks.
Prosecutors claim that in exchange, he shielded drug traffickers, including his own brother, Tony Hernandez, who was found guilty of drug trafficking in the United States in 2019 and sentenced to life in prison for his crime.
Juan Carlos Bonilla, a former police commander in Honduras, and Mauricio Hernandez, Hernandez‘s cousin, have both entered guilty pleas. Both of these individuals are co-defendants of Hernandez.
The former president insisted that he was innocent and asserted that the trial was the consequence of drug traffickers discrediting him in order to get retribution for the policies that he had implemented to combat the drug trade.
During Hernandez’s time in administration, the United States Department of Justice stated that he and his accomplices were responsible for the trafficking of more than 400 tons of cocaine heading for the United States through Honduras.
“Juan Orlando Hernandez abused his position as President of Honduras to operate the country as a narco-state where violent drug traffickers were allowed to operate with virtual impunity, and the people of Honduras and the United States were forced to suffer the consequences,” the United States Attorney General Merrick Garland stated in a statement. “As today’s conviction demonstrates, the Justice Department is disrupting the entire ecosystem of drug trafficking networks that harm the American people, no matter how far or how high we must go.”
Hernandez’s nation had been paying careful attention to the case, and the media had referred to it as the “trial of the century” to describe the proceedings.
