Not only the Menendez brothers' case

(CNN) — Due to podcasts and TV shows about true crimes, Americans are obsessed with being armchair detectives. Few of those projects have led to legal changes.

Recently, brothers Erik and Lyle Menendez were sentenced to life in prison for premeditating the 1989 murder of their parents, Jose and Kitty Menendez, in their Beverly Hills family mansion.

Los Angeles prosecutors announced Thursday that they are reviewing new evidence in their case before a hearing next month, including a letter written by Erik Menendez, 53, that his lawyers say supports allegations that their father sexually abused them for years.

On their motion to review the case last year, the brothers’ lawyers cited the Peacock docuseries “Menendez + Menudo: Boys Betrayed.” The project interviewed a former Menudo member who swore that Jose Menendez sexually abused him when he was 14.

Ryan Murphy’s Netflix dramatisation of the Menendez murders, “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story,” revived interest in the case. The brothers denounced the scripted series as inaccurate, but Kim Kardashian and others highlighted their legal efforts.

“Many people are now interested in the case and talking to me about television’s power. It can illuminate something or dark corners, Murphy told Variety this week. “We gave them their moment in public opinion.”

This is not the first time pop culture has influenced law. Some other examples:

In 2008, the famous singer was acquitted of child sexual abuse charges after a tape showed him having sex with a 14-year-old girl. Kelly and sexual misconduct allegations were still discussed over the years.

In January 2019, “Surviving R. Kelly,” an explosive multi-episode docuseries, revealed several women’s abuse allegations, which Kelly denied.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Illinois issued a 13-count indictment for child pornography and obstruction of justice months later in July 2019. A five-count indictment from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York charged Kelly with sex trafficking in New York and attempting to influence a case in Atlanta. In August 2019, Kelly was charged with Minnesota prostitution with a minor for an alleged July 2001 promotional event incident.

Kelly denied all charges.

A second season with more allegations aired in January 2020 after “Surviving R. Kelly” was a hit.

Kelly received a 30-year sentence for federal racketeering and sex trafficking in 2021. The R&B star was also convicted of child pornography and enticement. His 20-year prison sentence was separate.

Without Netflix, 25-year-old photographer Teresa Halbach’s disappearance and death in October 2005 might have seemed like a local Wisconsin story.

In 2015, Netflix aired “Making a Murderer,” about Steven Avery and his nephew Brendan Dassey, who were convicted of Halbach’s murder.

The 10-episode series was so popular that viewers created online forums to discuss the crime and share their theories and evidence interpretations.

Season 2, “Making a Murderer: Part 2,” premiered in 2018.

In 2016, Dassey’s life sentence was overturned. Avery was sentenced to life.

A federal appeals court upheld the conviction after prosecutors appealed.

Over the years, Avery has lost numerous appeals and motions.

Both men are jailed.

“The Jinx: The Life and Deaths of Robert Durst” is a true crime series that gained media attention.

Durst, an eccentric New York real estate heir, was arrested before HBO’s March 2015 series finale. CNN’s parent company owns HBO.

The series examined Durst’s unsolved disappearance of his wife Kathie in 1982, his friend Susan Berman’s 2000 execution, and his neighbour Morris Black’s 2002 death and dismemberment in Galveston, Texas.

Durst was arrested for Berman’s murder during the first season after claiming self-defence in Black’s death.

He received a life sentence without parole in 2021 for Berman’s first-degree murder.

His wife died in January 2022, but Durst was charged with her death.

HBO released a second season of “The Jinx” in April 2024.

The “Serial” podcast popularised the new media format and freed a man convicted of premeditating the murder of his high school girlfriend.

Sarah Koenig’s 2014 podcast examined Adnan Syed’s 1999 premeditated murder of Hae Min Lee, as they were seniors at Woodlawn High School in Baltimore County.

The show’s producers say the first season broke podcast download records with over 300 million downloads. Syed was serving life for first-degree murder, robbery, kidnapping, and false imprisonment.

In September 2022, Syed’s conviction was overturned due to defence questions.

Syed is free during appeal.
