In anticipation of adapting 'Avatar

The ‘Titanic’ director tells a true historical tragedy from just recently.

Although the ‘Avatar’ franchise seems to be going on forever, James Cameron is already planning his next move after his Pandora adventures. Deadline reports that he has acquired the rights to Charles Pellegrino’s unpublished novel ‘Ghosts of Hiroshima’ to direct a film about the atomic bomb.

In August 2025, Pellegrino’s book will follow his 2015 book “Last Train from Hiroshima,” but Cameron’s film will combine the two stories. Cameron knew Pellegrino from his work as the director’s scientific adviser on “Avatar” and “Titanic,” as well as his books about the ship’s sinking, including “Ghosts of the Titanic.”

Cameron would partly portray 29-year-old engineer Tsutomu Yamaguchi, the only survivor of Japan’s two World War II atomic bombs. After the US military bombed Hiroshima on August 6, he took a train to Nagasaki the next day and survived the August 9 bombing.

“I’ve struggled with this topic for years and want to make a movie about it. Met Tsutomu Yamaguchi. He was hospitalised. I must continue his personal story since he passed it on. “I can’t ignore him,” Cameron told Deadline. Yamaguchi avoided tragedies that killed 110,000–210,000 people. The unique story is Cameron’s first non-Avatar project since Titanic.

The technology that made the first ‘Avatar’ sequel possible took 13 years to become available, despite its massive success. However, time seems set and the three sequels will arrive much faster. ‘Avatar 3′ (or ‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’, its final title) has a date, plot, and other details that continue the story from ‘Avatar 2’. Our current knowledge is this.

The original date was December 20, 2024, but it will now be December 19, 2025. After shooting simultaneously with the second film in New Zealand, the film is nearly finished, and post-production (and editing, though Cameron denies having nine hours of material) awaits.

It appears this will not be the norm. We know the next installments will jump in time and take place on Earth, so this third one may be the end of the Sully story.

The most notable actors joining the cast are Michelle Yeoh (‘Everything at Once, Everywhere’), Oona Chaplin (Talisa in ‘Game of Thrones’) as Varang, leader of the new Na’vi tribe, and David Thewlis (‘Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban’), but their roles in this third part are unknown. Michelle Rodriguez will not return.

Does James Cameron still direct ‘Avatar 3’?
Of course. James Cameron will direct the third film, but the script will change most. In collaboration with Cameron, Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver wrote the second part. Shane Salermo, who co-wrote ‘Avatar 2’ and ‘Savages’, a forgotten Oliver Stone film from a decade ago, co-wrote the third part. He has a team of television scriptwriters who helped him reduce 1,300 pages of notes to 800 pages of script for the second part.

Since Cameron has said he wants to train someone to direct after the third installment, it is unclear if he will continue. “We have written up to the fifth film, and I have ideas for the sixth and seventh, but I will probably pass the baton then. Death will find me. We enjoy our work. We love it. Great people work here.”
