A Tropical Storm Frances sweeps Louisiana

Tropical Storm (Houma) Initially categorized as a hurricane, Francine is making her way onshore into Louisiana on Thursday, causing power outages for a large number of people and apprehension about catastrophic flooding.

Images of communities devastated by the storm, with some streets submerged and people using sandbags to defend their properties, were shown on local television channels.

A website that records outages indicates that over 370,000 individuals in Louisiana do not now have electricity.

According to the U.S. National Hurricane Center (NHC), Francine hit land on Wednesday afternoon (6 p.m. Eastern time) in Louisiana as a Category 2 hurricane on a scale of 5, however it was later downgraded to a Category 1.

A few hours later, the NHC upgraded Francine to a tropical storm, bringing with it winds of up to 53 mph (85 km/h), a rise in sea level of 3 to 6 feet (1 to 2 meters), and deluges of rain to portions of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida.

The weather service issued a warning around two in the morning Eastern Time, saying, “This rain could lead to significant flash and urban river flooding.”

This is especially true in the New Orleans metropolitan area, where the mayor has urged people to stay inside. This big Louisiana city was very hard affected by Hurricane Katrina in August 2005, which was one of the worst storms in US history, killing over 1,800 people.

The storm is predicted by the NHC to diminish as it passes over Louisiana and heads toward nearby Mississippi.

Numerous municipalities in Louisiana have issued orders for evacuation. Declaring a state of emergency in the state on Tuesday allows federal funding to be allocated to local authorities, as announced by President Joe Biden.

The decision has been made by colleges and universities in the Baton Rouge, Louisiana, area to close on Friday.

Sandbag

The people of Houma, a little hamlet southwest of New Orleans, were hard at work getting ready for Hurricane Harvey. “We want to make sure they have essentials with them and gas for their generators,” Alicia B., manager of an open gas station, told AFP.

Sandbags have been positioned at building entrances in the streets to keep water out.

The state National Guard declared that it was prepared to step in, mobilizing 387 vehicles, 87 ships, and 32 helicopters to offer support. They said on X that 1.1 million liters of water are in storage and prepared for distribution if necessary.

To a lesser degree, the coast of Texas and portions of Mississippi are also anticipated to be impacted.

Francine will then move north and is predicted to lose power quickly.

The storm is continuously being observed by the National Hurricane Center, which even sends planes into its center.

The North Atlantic hurricane season, which spans from the beginning of June to the end of November, is predicted by the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to be exceptionally turbulent this year. This is especially because of the heat of the oceans, which intensifies hurricanes. Forecasts were released at the end of May.

Three storms this season have already occurred, including Beryl and Debby, which have claimed several lives.
