Donald Trump has aligned himself with his Democratic opponent, Kamala Harris, by indicating his support for a possibly historic shift in federal legislation that would categorize marijuana as a less hazardous narcotic.

According to the U.S. Cannabis Council, the similarity represents a significant movement in popular opinion toward legalization in recent years and is the first time that both major-party presidential candidates have supported comprehensive cannabis reform.

The Republican front-runner for president announced on social media on Sunday night that he would “keep focusing on research to unlock medical uses of marijuana as a Schedule 3 drug” and that he would support a bill that would legalize marijuana sales to adults in Florida for any purpose.

Mr. Trump’s statement raises the likelihood that he may attack Ms. Harris for her prior marijuana charges while serving as San Francisco district attorney, just before the two party leaders convene for an important debate. Given that drug convictions in the US disproportionately impact non-white offenders, Mr. Trump’s strategy to increase his support among non-white men may also align with this line of attack.

In addition to supporting decriminalization, Harris referred to the Drug Enforcement Administration’s (DEA) current classification of marijuana as a Schedule 1 drug, joining heroin and LSD, as “absurd.” In her previous role as attorney general in 2010, she oversaw the enforcement of cannabis laws and opposed the legalization of adult usage for recreational purposes in California.

Tulsi Gabbard, a Democrat who later endorsed Trump and sought for the Democratic presidential candidacy in 2020, has already attacked Harris on her prosecutorial record. In 2022, Gabbard announced her departure from the party.

During his 2016 campaign, Mr. Trump stated that states ought to be in charge of cannabis laws. But then-Attorney General Jeff Sessions overturned an Obama-era directive that barred federal officials from taking tough measures against marijuana sales in states where the substance is legalized during his time in the White House.

President Joe Biden’s request for a review sparked the DEA’s decision to alter the drug’s federal classification, which is currently under progress. The modification would not fully legalize marijuana for recreational use; the DEA has not made a final determination on it. It might not make a decision until the following presidential administration, which will highlight the positions of the contenders.

Americans are in favor of legalizing

In recent years, federal drug laws have not kept up with state laws; currently, 38 states have legalized medical marijuana and 24 have legalized recreational usage.

In a Gallup poll conducted last year, around 70% of Americans supported legalization, which is more than twice as many as the 3 in 10 who supported it in 2000 and the greatest percentage ever recorded by the polling company. Young voters, a significant group in the seven crucial swing states, showed even greater support.

David Culver, senior vice president of public relations for the U.S. Cannabis Council, stated in a statement on Monday that “we believe cannabis reform is a winning issue.”

The change in federal policy would not completely legalize marijuana for recreational use. Instead, it would transfer some anabolic steroids and ketamine from Schedule 1 to Schedule 3.

Smart Approaches to Marijuana, a group, reports that attorneys general in over a dozen states and supporters disagree with the planned change, citing a lack of data.

At City Church in Tallahassee, Mr. Trump discussed the subject on the same day that Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, a fellow Republican who has already challenged him for the 2024 presidential nomination, spoke. DeSantis fiercely opposed two ballot initiatives in November, one of which legalized marijuana for recreational use and the other of which enshrined abortion rights.

Mr. DeSantis has been vocally opposing the marijuana amendment for months, claiming that it will lower the standard of living in Florida cities by lingering the scent of marijuana.

In a resolution passed in May, the Florida Republican Party openly condemned the proposal, stating that it will “benefit powerful marijuana special interests, while endangering children and jeopardizing Florida’s family-friendly business and tourism climate.”
